For those of you who are joining us for the 2012 Moab Easter Jeep Safari and will be staying in one of our condos, this thread has been setup for you. In it, I will post important information and updates regarding our trip, condo assignments, meal coordination and anything else needed to ensure we'll have a good time. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them here so that everyone can benefit from the subsequent Q&A.

Caravan
If you're planning to caravan out to Moab with us, we will heading out to Las Vegas on Friday, March 30th and will be staying at the South Point Casino. If you would like to join us for some fun that night, you can book a room by clicking on the link below. Otherwise, we will meet you out in the parking lot on Saturday the 31st at 8:00 AM - PLEASE BE GASED UP AND READY TO ROLL:

South Point Casino (http://www.southpointcasino.com/)

Condo Assignments
Please note that several of the units have 1 of the 3 bedrooms furnished with 2 twin or full size beds. Tony and Stephanie are bringing their daughter and have requested to have a master suite so that they could room her with them. Unless I hear from you with specific requests, these are the condos you will be assigned to and you will need to decide amongst yourselves as to who gets to sleep in what room.

Unit 1: Eddie & Cindy, Doug, Moochie
Unit 2: Chris & Jen, clarsen, Sharkey & MTG (only for a couple of nights)
Unit 3: Brian & Diane, Mituk & Casper, 08YELLO-RUBI
Unit 4: Don & Lori, Ray, Ken & Susan
Unit 5: Tony & Family, Steve, Dave & Laura

Meals
Unlike last year, we're going to make it so that each unit is responsible for only 1 dinner (Takeout or something like delivery pizza is fine). Breakfast and lunch will be up to you to decide. Please note that these meals are for condo residents ONLY so please DO NOT invite others to join UNLESS they are specifically contributing to the dinner in question and are aware that they need to provide for everyone. While guests are always welcome to join us, they need to come with their own food as we cannot ask condo residents to provide for them. I don't mean to sound so heartless here but, this was a real problem last year and I'm just trying to mitigate it before it becomes a problem again. Please discuss amongst yourselves and let me know what you will be cooking:

Sunday - Unit 1
Monday - Unit 5
Tuesday - Unit 2
Wednesday - Unit 4
Thursday - Unit 3
Friday - Leftovers Night

Runs
For those of you who've been coming out to Moab with us year in and year out, you know that group size has become a growing problem (no pun intended). So, while we will still allow anyone to join us, there are a few things that we're going to establish as minimum requirements.

1. Tow points front and rear
2. Rocker Guards
3. 35" Tires - MINIMUM
4. Lockers front and rear
5. ALL Project-JK decals (windshield, side logos, rear fenders, etc./Black windshield decals not allowed)
6. NO decals from other websites or manufacturers who do not support us

If you are staying in one of our condos and do not have all our decals, please let me know and I will send you what you need. What you do with them after the trip is up to you but, if you wish to do runs with us, they need to be clearly displayed on your Jeep.

Because of the extreme size of our group, we will only be focusing our filming on the first 10 Jeeps. We are asking that you purposefully change up your positions throughout the runs so that everyone gets a chance to be in our films. Everyone going is capable and experienced and for the most part, I'm going to ask that you spot yourselves and/or help others nearby to spot for you as needed.

Trails to be run to be announced.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

68 days to go and we can hardly wait. What time does the caravan leave on Friday? Im thinking about making my special Italian spaghetti sauce with meat balls and Italian sweet sausage. Will have to see what our roommates think about this idea. It takes a while to make but this is very important for the best taste :-)

Tony

people show up in vegas whenever they can on friday. we'll most likely head out early to avoid any traffic. there are a couple of grocery stores in moab and you can get most of what you need for anything there if needed.

Joining in on the Easter Jeep Safari threads a little late ... :doh:

My wife, Naomi, and I will be in Moab again for the full week of EJS 2012. Hoping to join you guys again on the trails. We have the same cabin (Morris Last Resort - Pioneer I) booked up in the La Sal Mountains for 8 nights (March 31 - April 8). About a 15 min. drive up the La Sal Mtn. Loop outside of town.

Looking forward to catching up with you guys!

Hey guys, not making it to EJS this year cause I'm getting married on the 25th but since your gonna be in Vegas, there is a short trail by the South Coast called Tie rod. If I'm in town I'd love to hook up and take anyone through for a quick shake down run before Moab and before the drinking begins :beer: Let me know if anyone is interested or if you need anything while in Vegas. Anyone with a Jeep is family as far as I'm concerned. As it gets closer I'll know if I'm gonna be here or not but just an Idea. Keep It Tight has you thinking Colorado huh! :bleh: Prime wheeling months in Colorado are June, July, August, and September. If you want to make it as high as 14,000 ft (Mt. So, send me a PM and we can get planning or I can bring the Colorado guide books and we can start planning at EJS. :thumb:

Hey everyone, I apologize for not keeping up with this as much as I normally do. It's been a crazy start of the year for us and it's been all that we could do to keep our heads above water.

So you know, there's been a little change to the condo assignment now that Jeff and Megan aren't able to join us on this trip. While Sharkey and MTG will come in to fill in their spot, it'll only be for a couple of nights and so, we'll be putting them in with Chris and mkjeep. This way, they will get the better part of the week to themselves.

I need to let you all know that we will also be meeting up with a good size group coming in from Israel on Wednesday and, more than likely, a few other people from Mexico, possibly Germany and of course, from all over the country. We are going to do what we can to accomodate everyone and, while I'd be grateful if you could help us to be good hosts, I will fully understand it if you chose to do runs on your own. All I ask is that you let me know ahead of time.

I'll try to get the dinner assignments updated today and, if you have any questions, please post them up here. :cool:

While I'm not part of the condo crew, I will say that I am planning a run down Lockhart Basin ... and probably on Wednesday from the sounds of things. This is a very, very remote trail and would love some company if anybody is interested in joining. This one is not a Jeep Safari trail ... so it will be open.

Lockhart Basin is long ... 37 miles. Not terribly difficult but the views along the rim of Canyonlands on this trail are supposed to be spectacular. Similar to the White Rim trail ... just not as long and no permit needed. You can read about the trail here:

It looks like the weather has a chance to be pretty good this time of year in Moab. It's too early to tell for sure, but if we want to run topless is there a place to store the top and doors at the condos? Is space limited? Do I need to put on the soft top before making the pilgrimage?

yeah, i've been following the weather as well and right now, it's unusually awesome out. i do see it's cooling off and some rain is coming but, so long as it doesn't snow like it normally does when ejs is early in the year, it should be awesome for us. regarding tops, yes, we specifically get condos with garages so that we can store our tops and doors in them :yup:

wayoflife
03-22-2012, 05:54 PM
i should add that we do typically recommend that you come out with your soft top though but mainly because they weigh less and are a lot more forgiving on the trail. in other words, if you hit your soft top on the rocks, it'll get scratched but, if you hit your hard top, you run the risk of breaking it.

OK, it's time to ask the big question (this is my first Moab and first major, multi-day Jeep run) - what do I need to bring for the Jeep? Thanks. Would have never thought to bring both.

Related question: After a quick forum search it looks like enforcement of things such as drivers side mirrors (when doorless) and mud flaps is hit or miss. What experience have you had? Do you recommend having both? Mirror will be easy, but I'll need to figure out something for the flaps.

if you can bring extra parts, you should. but, if not, i wouldn't worry too much about it as parts are usually plentiful out in moab during ejs and the outpost (off road shop there) is open 24 hours a day for the week - ask me how i know :crazyeyes:

Ask and ye shall receive:

Direct from the Utah Legislative Website-

Utah Code Section 41: Motor Vehicles

41-6a-1633. Mudguards or flaps at rear wheels of trucks, trailers, truck tractors, or altered motor vehicles -- Exemptions.
(1) (a) Except as provided in Subsection (2), when operated on a highway, the following vehicles shall be equipped with wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons behind the rearmost wheels to prevent, as far as practicable, the wheels from throwing dirt, water, or other materials on other vehicles:
(i) a vehicle that has been altered:
(A) from the original manufacturer's frame height; or
(B) in any other manner so that the motor vehicle's wheels may throw dirt, water, or other materials on other vehicles;
(ii) any truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,500 pounds or more;
(iii) any truck tractor; and
(iv) any trailer or semitrailer with an unladen weight of 750 pounds or more.
(b) The wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons shall:
(i) be at least as wide as the tires they are protecting;
(ii) be directly in line with the tires; and
(iii) have a ground clearance of not more than 50% of the diameter of a rear-axle wheel, under any conditions of loading of the motor vehicle.
(2) Wheel covers, mudguards, flaps, or splash aprons are not required:
(a) if the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer is designed and constructed so that the requirements of Subsection (1) are accomplished by means of fenders, body construction, or other means of enclosure; or
(b) on a vehicle operated or driven during fair weather on well-maintained, hard-surfaced roads if the motor vehicle:
(i) was made in America prior to 1935;
(ii) is registered as a vintage vehicle; or
(iii) is a custom vehicle as defined under Section 41-6a-1507.
(3) Except as provided in Subsection (2)(b), rear wheels not covered at the top by fenders, bodies, or other parts of the vehicle shall be covered at the top by protective means extending rearward at least to the center line of the rearmost axle.

Amended by Chapter 171, 2009 General Session

Interestingly, it looks like another code section makes wheel spacers illegal. I have no idea how strict they are about this stuff, especially in Moab for EJS which is a huge money maker for the city. With that said though, I could see some podunk towns outside of Moab using this week to fill their coffers.

Sharkey

Just found another one...look at the last provision:

41-6a-1631. Prohibitions.
(1) A person may not operate on a highway a motor vehicle that is mechanically altered or changed:
(a) in any way that may under normal operation:
(i) cause the motor vehicle body or chassis to come in contact with the roadway;
(ii) expose the fuel tank to damage from collision; or
(iii) cause the wheels to come in contact with the body;
(b) in any manner that may impair the safe operation of the vehicle;
(c) so that any part of the vehicle other than tires, rims, and mudguards are less than three inches above the ground;
(d) to a frame height of more than 24 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4,500 pounds;
(e) to a frame height of more than 26 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 4,500 pounds and less than 7,500 pounds;
(f) to a frame height of more than 28 inches for a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 7,500 pounds;
(g) by stacking or attaching vehicle frames (one from on top of or beneath another frame); or
(h) so that the lowest portion of the body floor is raised more than three inches above the top of the frame.
(2) If the wheel track is increased beyond the O.E.M. specification, the top 50% of the tires shall be covered by the original fenders, by rubber, or other flexible fender extenders under any loading condition.

not a silly question. we'll definitely be posting up pics while we're there and, while we will be filming as well, we won't have anything up for a while. unfortunately, we're a bit back logged and still need to get footage up from last year. :crazyeyes:

There seems to be some excitement in the air. :rock: I have no Jeep to play with so I finally hooked up the TV to the internet and have been watching Youtube Moab videos all day. I also downloaded a new app and have been checking out all of the Moab hot spots. I should be a Moab tourism expert by the time we leave on Friday.

Waiting for Nemo to return so we can start loading. Still need to do a few final maintenance chores. Just need the Jeep.

What time are people leaving on Friday for Vegas? We are working but hope to head out by 2 pm or so. Should be in Vegas for dinner. :beer:

Our estimated time of departure is 11, but this is just an estimate at this point. Unfortunately Cristina won't be able to join us on this trip. She accepted a full time manager in training position with Hollister Co. With 8 weeks of college left before she graduates, she's going to be super busy. Steph and I will miss her tremendously but are very proud of her decision to start an adventure of her own.

BTW, i just wanted to remind everyone that if you're caravaning out to moab with us, please be gassed up and ready to roll at 8 AM down in the south point parking lot. SERIOUSLY!!

if you're not ready to roll, we're going to head out without you and you'll just have to catch up to us. this is a long ass drive made even longer with a BIG group like we're going to have as every gas stop takes a small eternity. that and take away an hour for the mountain time change and we still won't be pulling into moab until dark. this is of course assuming nobody has any vehicle issues along the way as we almost always do. i would like as much as possible to make it into town before all the restaurants and stores close so please take this notice seriously.
