Way more moms in yoga pants than normal where I work in SD. I bet triple the amount I usually see.

Anyone self quarantined?

NYC went from 8500 confirmed cases to over 15000 in two days...and Cuomo said this morning that they have only 83000 available beds today...and suspected peak is still several weeks away...

Why would that surprise anyone? Confirmed cases is just a function of the number of tests available and given...it doesn’t mean that 6,500 new people caught the virus in two days. On top of that, the vast majority of people with “confirmed cases” should just be sent home to ride it out away from everyone.

I bet if we could test the population as a whole right now, the number of positive tests could very easily be in the hundreds of thousands. Again though, that number is, in many respects, meaningless. Where it has value is for directing resources to quantifiable hot zones and tracing contacts to confirmed cases.

Same in Reno, but I am told from inside sources that our turnaround should be decreased substantially within the week.

There are rapid tests for some flu strains that take 45 min to two hours, i'm sure they are working on this one too.

In Nevada, 2,448 tests were “wasted” on people who tested negative (as of about a day ago). We have 190 confirmed positive tests. The expectation is that Clark County (Vegas) is way behind this in terms of hospital preparedness. Vegas hospitals were still wasting resources on non-necessary, elective procedures up until just a day or two ago.

We are in much better shape up in the north, but the system could still get overwhelmed by people going to the hospital when they shouldn’t.

They already exist in other countries.
We were offered them, instead turned them down so the cdc could make their own more expensive less accurate test that took a couple weeks to develop.
The CDC and state labs can only process so many a day.
They’re rationing tests at hospitals to people they’re pretty much sure have it. - however - some don’t, and those that don’t (that need care) are currently being put in isolation with those that do and getting infected anyways.

These test numbers mean nothing right now because we’re doing shit wrong, even local hospitals have developed their own tests but can’t share that data with other hospitals bc of bureaucratic and administrative red tape for some reasons that are beyond my comprehension.

My local Jeep club started sewing masks out of old clothing and fabrics they had laying around because there aren’t enough masks for hospital staff and they’re begging for anything. It’s truly a fucked up day when nurses and doctors have to throw a god damn t shirt over their face to go in and care for someone in need at their job.

I understand the sentiment, but unless your club has old clothing made out of either pleated hydrophobic or electrostatic material of a certain grade, I’m not really sure what is believed to be gained by the efforts. The practitioners would be better of reusing their existing masks for the day (though that is not great for the patients) than throwing a repurposed set of old Hanes over their face in between each patient (which helps neither the patient nor the doctor/nurse).

We also need to be looking for ways to quickly sanitize nontraditional closed air systems (e.g. firefighter masks and O2 tanks, full face scuba equipment, etc.).

I agree, but they’re actually asking for anything right now, and to their credit they did their homework on the materials it’s the best they can do for a make at home mask. It’s not just the Coronavirus patients, the children’s oncology center, every other part of the hospital system is already being rationed and depleted and we’re just at the beginning of it. Living a shitty real life version of MASH in one of the richest industries in the country.

Well, I wouldn't worry about tests or confirmed cases anymore...it's apparent there is absolutely no way to test everyone that has the virus...so I believe the thinking is to let everyone get infected to produce a herd immunity result, and only test those in dire straits...so the numbers of confirmed cases will plateau soon (but not nearly a true reflection of how many infected)...but the death numbers are going to grow exponentially.

But I'm not bitching...
