Welcome! Glad to have you here.

I have a Black but I haven't had much of a chance to play with all the features. I'm sure there is a lot of info out there if I took the time to go look for it. But perhaps a quick user guide for optimal setting for use on the trail? Is that even possible? Maybe a tips and tricks write up?

Yes! Let me work on something. As for a very short set up.

Use resolution setting 1080 @ 60 frames per second (FPS). Turn the camera on and hit the shutter (top) button to record! Set it, forget it and pic some cool spots to mount the camera using the suction cup mount (extra) or the stickies that come with the package.

I do have a cheat sheet we send to the athletes I can repurpose for here...soon!

Did you get a Hero3 Black Edition? If so, depending on settings an hour will be correct. I know, short. Let me know which camera you have and what settings you are running, we can dive a little deeper after that.

Also, have you updated the firmware (this is a question I will ask everyone)

Thanks!

Thank you. Don't remember if I updated the firmware. Is it compatible with Apple, with a program or is it a download straight from the website?
I've been having problems buying products which require a PC for updates and such.

Secondly I have the GoPro2.

question:

my son has the silver and as I said, he loves it. but in upgrading to the black, is there computer requirements that he should be aware of in order to have optimum playback on the higher settings?

andrew-

Hi Andrew,

Yes! Very much so. You will want to have a computer that is at least these specs...

2.7Ghz Intel i5 - This is the processor and speed of the processor is shown in gigahertz (Ghz), (like horsepower)
8GB of Memory (working memory not overall storage memory) (this is torque)

The reason for these specs is that the Black Edition is our professional camera. The camera can collect up to 45/Mbs (mega bits per second) - Which is a really high flow of information intake. Which is turn takes more power to read and process for post production.

Here is an article on our site about what can happen if you computer is overpowered and it gives you some guidelines to computer specs...

Thanks!

Love my new Black Edition, hate the sub hour battery life. Going to try and charge/record next trail run. Nice to have you apart of the WAYALIFE!

Here are the system requirements for the CineForm Studio from GoPro.

System Requirements
Minimum Spec Requirements: (For video playback in quarter or half-resolution 3D)
Mac
• Intel Mac ONLY
• OS 10.6.3 – 10.7.2
• Dual Core Processor
• 2GB RAM
Windows XP, Vista, 7
• Intel Core2 Duo or AMD Athon II X2, 2.4 GHz
• 2GB RAM
• 1280×800 screen resolution
• Any graphics card that supports OpenGL
Note: the application will run on slower CPUs, but 3D playback, even in quarter-res mode, may not be processed smoothly.

Recommended Spec Requirements: (full-resolution 3D playback)
Mac
• Intel Mac ONLY
• Quad Core Processor, 4GB RAM
• 1920×1080 or higher screen resolution
• Fast dedicated media drive
Windows XP, Vista, 7
• Intel i7-860 or better
• 4GB RAM
• Windows 7 64-bit
• Fast dedicated media drive
• 1920×1080 or higher screen resolution
• Quicktime Install required for .MOV file conversion
Note: this application will run on slower CPUs but 3D playback may not be as smooth.

Mac and PC:
Required for passive 3D (interleaved) or side-by-side output to consumer 3D TV:
• Any OpenGL-enabled graphics card with
secondary HDMI or DVI output

Required for active 3D (120 Hz) displays
• nVidia 3D Vision or 3D Vision Pro
• nVidia Quadro FX 2000, 3000, 3800, 4000, 4800,
5000, 5800, 6000
• Dual-Link DVI cable

3D GoPro CineForm 422 encoded files are much larger than GoPro native .mp4 files. To manage 3D converted media, we suggest picking up an external storage device.

Mac External Hard Drive Recommendations
• 500GB-1TB
• 7200 RPM
• Firewire 800 recommended (most OS Snow Leopard machines have this). Firewire 400 and USB is acceptable but will cause slower transfer speeds
• Dedicated power supply
PC External Hard Drive recommendations
• 500GB-1TB
• 7200 RPM
• USB 2.0 connection
• Dedicated power supply (if faster connection is available, ie. ESata recommended if possible, USB is acceptable but will cause slower transfer speeds)

Compatibility With Other Editing Software:
Avid Media Composer 5.x
Adobe Premiere CS5.x
Final Cut Pro 7.x
Sony Vegas 9.x or 10.x
iMovie
Premiere Elements 7.x
Windows Movie Maker

Bah, just bought my hero 3 black edition! Love it though, really great camera. Only gripe is the aforementioned battery life, I solved this with the battery BacPac.

Question though, I had a micro HDMI cable that I tried to use with it, but the camera wouldn't detect it and I couldn't get to the media playback setting. I heard this is because the cable had integrated ethernet, is this the case? Also, is there going to be a firmware update released to fix this?

I have a hero 3 black, the battery life is horrid.
I got "The Frame" Camera mount so I can run a USB to keep it charged.

I would have used the extra space & weight you saved over there Hero2 and put a larger battery in.

What are the recommended settings to get an hours battery life?

I have a hero2 and a hero3 Black with the suction cup. I just updated it last week to use the iPhone/iPad app to view and delete what's on the camera. I love the ability to use my iPhone from the cab to turn it off and on and start recording.

One of these days, I should probably get around to replacing my GhettoPro set up. iPhone + c-clamp + rearview mirror. :D

I used a GripGo till I got my gopro hero3 black and suction cup mount. I still use the GripGo when listening to music and to just have my phone stay in one place and be accessible. They are like $14 at Walmart/target I think. You can rinse it off when it looses its grip to clean it and make it sticky again.
