What charities do you give to?

We had a great year financially and want to increase our charitable giving. Please post up where you like to give and why.

Our current giving:

1) Our alma matter university
2) Local humane society
3) Heifer international
4) Local library
5) We've been buying "essentials" and bagging them up and giving them to homeless people when we see them

We, as in my Crossfit gym, talked to local teachers for children that were not going to have a good Christmas. We raised $17,500 and paid for Christmas gifts and clothing essentials for 33 local children this year. We had their guardians come pickup the gifts before Christmas so the kids would think it was from Santa. They didn't know we bought them the gifts. It was pretty cool to be a part of this.

My current favorite is Compassion International for a few reasons:
1.They actually invest in children and education to change their lives and future. This isn't a temporary relief effort. The goal is to get the children to a position where they can help others later as adults.
2. They are effective, efficient, and open about finances as well as results.
3. It gives children hope in the name of Jesus, because there's something more important than just our 75 years here on earth.

Our company only does United Way and we get a bit of unofficial "encouragement" to participate. My wife does a lot with her company, though, and loves the toy drives they do. We'll also do things for the humane society such as randomly buying supplies they need.

As for Heifer International, I used to know the director for them.

Is this a fact of them keeping donations or are you just assuming? I know a handful that do this, but wasn't sure about warriors.

They're based out of Jacksonville and the now former CEO caught a lot of flack for using almost all of the donations as his and his friends' personal piggy bank. The amount spent for charitable and not administrative "costs" was extremely low.

Well that's shitty. I'm glad we've never donated to them. Thanks for the info brotha.

Truly, agreed for the useful information. That's why he's the former ceo.

Agreed...
