RETIREMENT ROAD TOUR #1

Today we explored downtown Boise. It has a nice downtown with lots of places to eat and drink. It’s way cleaner than many cities of similar size in the east. We also went to the Boise Zoo- mainly to see the Red Pandas.

We then headed to Elko by driving south on Hwy-51 which turns into Hwy-225 in Nevada. It is a very remote area with a 100 mile section with no gas. Also much of Hwy-225 parallels the Owyhee River. There is a 10 mile portion of the river which weaves down a narrow canyon and the river has some real velocity.

I was wondering where the steady supply of water originated from. Then we found out.

It’s a good sized body of water. Plenty of RV’s scattered around it. It would be really easy to go off the grid in an RV in Nevada. Lots of places to park for free where nobody would bother you.

Elko is an interesting town. We drove around a bit and it’s definitely growing although it still maintains its Old Nevada feel.

Just a couple of interesting things we saw.

I wonder if this would fit in the back of a JLU? Asking for a friend.

Some of the Idaho national forest areas in Idaho near Coeur D’Alene were just destroyed 10 years ago when my wife and I last visited. I don’t remember the exact areas, but I remember diapers piled in fire pits near beautiful rivers and glass scattered across camp sites.

That just sucks. I’ve been to the dunes in Idaho and Utah many times and those were absolutely the two cleanest states I had spent time in. Seems like most folks there respected the areas that we were in, but that’s been years ago now. I’m sure with the influx of Californians that it’s gone to shit.

Spent a few months back in 96 building equipment for the Cortez mine. There was a casino called Klondike with a full sized polar bear mount right inside the entrance.

I hate litter and graffiti. Ironically as we drove into Boise there was Jersey Barricade that spray painted with huge letters: “Californians Suck!” I large number of people have migrated in to Idaho from Cali and the natives aren’t happy about it.

We rolled into Reno and headed directly to my Pliny The Elder supplier - Whole Foods. In the past they have had a large and reliable supply of Russian River beers……

Well fuck me to tears. 😭

None, nada, zip. No Russian River beers of any kind. Looking on the Russian River website I see that Total Wine and More is listed as a supplier of RRB in Reno so I call to see if they have any- they don’t. Guy tells me that the local distributor is no longer a distributor and nobody in the area is receiving Russian River Beers. 🤬

Ah, Elko. I stayed at a hotel there when I was visiting the Ruby mountains and looking for a house in Spring Creek. It's also the place I contracted COVID. Love/Hate that place.
