My in-laws are in town, so we are taking them to the coast.

What's some good stops along the way??

You going north or south?

Morro bay, Cambria, Hearst castle, big sur, Monterey bay to the north of you are nice. The 1 north of cambria starts to have some crazy coastal cliffs that is ranked one of the top drives in the world. Not for those who can't do severe cliffs or curvy roads.

Heading south you have Santa Barbara, pismo then a gap before hitting Malibu and Santa Monica, Venice.

All the above are great coastal drives. If you want the destination to be more relaxing, head north. If you want more activity at the end of the drive, head south. Santa Monica/Venice are pretty iconic and quite the place to people watch. It's more a LA/SoCal vibe.

That's all a great drive north of Morro. Depending on what you want to do and how many stops or if just a day trip. Cayucos is just north of morro. One street with some older shops and a little pier. Little town of Harmony has a tasting room and a little glass blowing shop and a few shops if they are open. . Then Cambria (cambria village has lots of shops). North of Cambria a couple miles is a elephant Seal beach. Then Hearst Castle and after that is the little stop of Ragged Point. After Ragged Point, a next cool stop is Gorda. Great little fish and chips place at the point with awesome views if its clear. Between cambria and Gorda there are some cool hiking/walking/picture trails. I forget the name but one you hike up a hill and back to a water fall. Pretty cool. From Gorda, you can go for quite a drive if you want to go all the way to big sur or monetery bay from there. From Morro to Gorda would be a pretty decent day trip if you did stops along the way.

x2 for Big Sur....there's a restaurant called Nepenthe....perfect for lunch on the deck 1000ft above the Pacific

Bunch of good suggestions already.

I'll toss in Point Lobos. Great views with a good chance of seeing whales this time of year.

Yeah, definitely stop at the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park overlook in Big Sur.... it's about a 5 min easy walk down a trail and it will blow them away.....
