    Exclamation CHECK ENGINE CODES : 2007-Up Jeep JK Wrangler



    Thanks to the advent of technology, just about every single part on your new Jeep JK Wrangler is wired up to a computer. And, if anything goes wrong with any one of these parts, your Jeep’s computer will make a note of it and/or even let you know about it by illuminating a Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL for short or ‘check engine’ light) or icons on your dash. Unfortunately, the MIL or other icons won’t tell you a whole lot other than the fact that your Jeep is having some kind of a problem and unless you take your Jeep into the dealership or have a OBDII reader handy, you’re pretty much out of luck, right? Wrong. As luck would have it, the JK Wrangler’s come with a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) reader built right into the dash and you can access them by following the 3 simple steps below. Once you have the DTC code(s) in hand, check it/them against the list below and you will be able to find out exactly what problems your Jeep is having.

    How to Read a DTC
    A DTC or Diagnostic Trouble Code is made up of 5 digits the first of which is one of the following letters:

    B - Body
    C - Chasis
    P - Power Train
    U - Network

    The 2nd digit indicates:
    0 - SAE
    1 - MFG

    The 3rd digit indicates:
    1 - Fuel & Air Metering
    2 - Fuel & Air Metering (Injector Circuit)
    3 - Injection Systems or Misfire
    4 - Auxillary Emissions Control
    5 - Vehicle Speed Control & Idle Control System
    6 - Computer Output Circuit
    7 - Transmission
    8 - Transmission

    The last 2 digits indicate:
    Fault (00-99)

    Instructions
    1. To check your Jeep JK Wrangler’s DTC codes, simply insert your key into the ignition, turn it to the ‘ON’ position but do not start the engine. Then, push the key into the ignition cylinder and while holding it in, turn it to the ‘OFF’ position and then back to the ‘ON’ position (3) times straight making sure to end with it in the ‘ON’ position. It is important to keep pushing in on the key to prevent it from catching at the different positions along the way.



    2. If you do step #1 correctly, all your dash lights will illuminate and your odometer will show up as a series of (6) dashes as shown in the pic to the left. If your Jeep JK Wrangler has any logged in any DTC’s, they will be displayed soon after the dashes appear. Write down the DTC(s) and check it/them against the list below to find out what they mean.



    3. If your Jeep JK Wrangler has not logged in any DTC’s, the dashes on your odometer will be followed by the message ‘-done-’. Turn your key to the ‘OFF’ position and you will in fact be done.

    Unhappy How to do the procedure on a 2011 Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon Unlimited v6 gas

    I have tried this procedure on my 2011 Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon Unlimited for several times but failed. Nothing came out on my dash except that annoying "check engine" light that keeps showing up on my dash even there's nothing wrong with the jeep. Also, I have used the AEV PROCAL module to reset the problem but it keeps coming back. Can someone help me with my concern. Thank you very much.

    You can try a hard reset by disconnecting your battery for a few minutes (10?). If that doesn't work you may have to take it to the dealership so they can plug it into their own computer to find the cause.

    I did this this morning on my 12 2dr and it didn't work going from on to off either. It works going from on to acc and back 3 times. Try again but just the one notch instead of two. Unfortunately none had no code for why it's been temping between half and 3/4 on my gauge the past couple months, but checked and went straight to done. In glad however it wasn't having other problems. Don't mean to sound upset that it didn't pop out a few grand I need to spend in code fixes.

    I just got my Superchips TrailDash from the mail and installed on my 2011 Jeep JK Rubicon. After setting up based on the Step-by-step instructions,
    Immediately reached for the Diagnostics for the check engine codes option and finally got the reading of U1418 - Implausible right wheel Distance Signal, and P0420 - Catalyst Efficiency (Bank 1) readings. Is there any section here which I could interpret these error codes and trouble shoot the specific problems? Anyone? Thanks

Jeep went offline while driving, for what reason I do not know,,,,,I do know what the code entails, but why would it have dropped offline in the first place is unknown and while I was driving 65mph plus...any ryhmme or reason the jk would drop out of forward travel and the re engage or reset itself,,? anything come to mind...its showing no other trouble codes and no mil light....

    We had this happen to our T&C where the dash re-set while driving. Since then I have learned a lot about how the CanBus operates and most techs hate it! Here is a short breakdown. The TIPM or fuse box is like a cross roads and handles most orders like fuel pump on, window down and such but is also pass through for like your dash display. The ECM and antilock break module go to the TIPM and have connections together. The BCM, body control module, go back to TIPM. There really is no rhyme or reason to it! An example I was given you get a code pointing at a wheel sensor problem. You check sensor wiring and can't find anything so you replace sensor. Still get code. Take to dealer and they do the same thing. Come to find out it is the anti lock break module but it could of been the TIPM also. When you have modules that have to pass commands through them but don't control anything with this command and this module gets a problem like a bad connection or chaffed wire you get codes that point no where! That is why techs will shot gun stuff like this when it may be just a connection!

    OK with that all said I would re seat all the connections under TIPM. There are a ton of them. Just tip it forward after depressing lock tabs. There is lock tabs on each one then push locking arm forward to release each one. Look at each connector and make sure they are clean. If dirty blow out connector and also look for pins pushed back out of housing. If so pin was probably never seated so pin needs to be pushed into shell from the back till it seats or clicks in place. Look at harnesses to make sure none are rubbing or rubbed through. They are really packed underneath and make tight bends. Make sure to lock each one after re seating them.

    Now go over to the ECM/PCM, electronic control module or programmable control module in front of brake module. Should be three connectors if manual transmission, four for automatics, and reseat all of these. You should hear a pop when you pull each one of these off. They seal very tight so make sure they are clean and sealing properly.

    If this doesn't fix the problem you could also re seat connector on back of dash display. From there it could be a bad module or a bad connection on the two CanBus wires. This would entail chasing wires and a schematic of the system. I wish I had a good or easy explanation but these systems are very complex. I could be something as simple as maybe you put in an aftermarket radio and the module that was added to talk to CanBus, yes the communications ties through radio, has a loose connection. These two wires for CanBus are plus and minus and need a module to terminate each connection. If it opens up it is like pulling your network cable from your computer. If they get shorted or crossed bad things happen also. On a chevy you could pull each module then jumper the two wires for the CanBus to eliminate each module. But since Chrysler passes the CanBus through modules this may not work!

    Try the simple things first like re seating stuff and look for the obvious like rubbed wires. If you find exposed wires seal them back up. Broken wires solder and cover with two layers of shrink tube. Did you just add or changes something? Did this system rest happen after a big bump? Is anything else occurring like whippersnapper going for no reason? What year jeep? The 07's had quite a few issues and have several differences with there sister models. Don't try to switch modules with a buddies jeep! He may not be yor buddy for long! This could make the module un usable.

    Forgot, lift + battery before doing ANY of the above things! This will ales reset the PCM and clear codes after about 15 minutes or just take + after finishing work and touch it to - before laying back down. This will drain the system down. Good luck.

    Just tried to read the code as I had the 'MIL' engine light on... our 2013 JKUR w/ the 3.6 wouldn't show the bars or codes at first but kept playing with it and found that it worked with the combination of the 'ON' to 'ACC' (one click back, not two to 'OFF' as 'tinkering1' says above) three times at a faster pace worked for us. We found that the speed of the clicking for & back made a difference, a slightly slower pace didn't work but the faster did...either way....Thanks Eddie for providing this great info and the list of codes for us to use! You rock !
