York 210 oba

So after many weeks on researching OBA systems I've decided to put a york on my 10' JKUR. But rather than buying a complete kit, I've decided to piece out my own kit and save a few $$$. Here is a partial write up on the process. I followed Wandering Trail's guide, I can post the link if it's allowed.

Reconditioned York w/6 gv pulley from a ebay seller for $175, the compressor was retroed with a dipstick and fill tube. And then I used a hydraulic hose for my output.

3 gallon tank, 175 pop off valve, 3/8 air brake hose, 2 compression fittings, 125/150psi pressure switch from ebay for $45 (forgot to take pics on the unboxing)


After acquiring most of the parts, I started on the install. I basically followed Wandering Trail's instructions and the process went smoothly. Here are some pictures.

I even found the perfect stool when working on the engine bay. [emoji16]

This is where things got interesting. Loosening the ac compressor to install washers, you'll need patience because its kinda cramped in there.

Decided to install the air tank on the rear rollbar. I used 2 1/2 u bolts.

Here is my manifold set up. 2 3/8 in/out on the sides then 4 1/4 npt up top. Coalescing filter I used is a Norgren excelon unit with a metal bowl and auto drain. I also installed a industrial quick connect.20170218_132112.jpg

Took me around 5 hours up to this point. Hope to get done more tomorrow. All I need to do is run 3/8 line to the back and finish up the wiring for the pressure switch and in cab switch.
 
Looks great. There really is no better OBA system. I had one on my old TJ, and someday will get around to setting up a kit on my 08. Just be sure to check oil regularly.

What makes this system so good? I've never actually heard of it. What are the typical air up times? Seems like a lot of work to set it up.

It's definitely a lot of work and a commitment. It builds unlimited air and fast. And because it is belt driven it is very quiet. I used it with a 7 gallon tank and a 1" air gun to brake loose lug nuts on big trucks. 20 lug nuts per wheel set and I could do it with very little down time. They can build very high pressures as well, I ran adjustable switch typically at 225 psi (compressor would do more but never felt comfortable), but you need to have a very good regulator after tank to run high pressures.

Back in the day, Yorks were all the rage. A good setup for sure especially if you can find a home for a tank but a lot has changed since then and not as many people feel the need for one including me.

More cfm's compared to electric oba's. I did a mock up yesterday, filled up my 3 gallon tank to 150 psi in a minute and change while on idle.

Thank you. That was the most difficult part of the install, finding a spot for the tank. The location where the tank is right now just took up unused space, not the prettiest but it would work for now.

I'm also installing a set of train horns that's why I went with the york. Now driving around in LA would be a blast [emoji28] 20170220_084622.jpg

A little over a grand including the Hornblasters shocker xl ($299). I could've saved $100 by going for a junkyard york, but I just went for a reconditioned unit for the peace of mind it brings.

I weighed the cost difference between the dual viair 444 vs the york. And to be honest, the extra 300 was worth it. Seeing that 3 gal tank fill up in less than a minute was awesome. Not to mention the noise difference between the york and the viairs.

Not being bias or anything as i had dual 444 on my 4runner a couple years ago.
 
Install a high idle control and you can drastically improve the fill time. But normally it runs as you drive so you won't even notice.

I will be using my flashpaq to increase idle when airing up. I'll try to post a video tomorrow to compare fill up times between idle and at 2k rpms. According to my research, it should be close to 12 cfms at 2k rpms.
 
I'm also installing a set of train horns that's why I went with the york.

I fantasize about having a set of these several times a day - especially when you get behind those self-absorbed assholes on their smart phones swerving their way to work in the passing lane... :daydream:

That's one of my main reason to always own a set of train/air horns. Specially for me that travels almost 700 mi a week. If you're not willing to put down the $300 for a decent set for now, I've had good success with 2 sets of the $20 dual air horn that ebay sells. Just remove the 1/8 solenoid it came with and buy a 1/2 solenoid and tee to 1/8 compression fittings to the horns. It gets pretty loud too.
 
So a little update. I can't find a good place to install the train horns. So I decided to cut up my exhaust and do a mid dump. Booger welded it in, but no leaks 😂 20170225_100008.jpg20170225_095959.jpg Pardon my rusted out turbo muffler.
I just used some round bar stock tp make a bracket for the hanger.

I then used the storage cubby for all the airlines and solenoid. 20170225_111811.jpg Tomorrow I'll try to finish up all the wiring and switches.

Have you noticed and loss in power running this set up. That's the biggest reservation I've heard of four our rigs. Weak engines and running another accessory off of it.
