Aftermarket Oil Filter Use – P1524 Oil Pressure DTC and Lubrication System Fault Codes

Canadian Quality Engineering Centre has noticed a trend of aftermarket oil filter failures resulting in engine replacement in Stellantis vehicles.

In most of these cases, DTC P1524 Oil Pressure Out of Range has set. Service Library lists a number of possible causes for P1524, including:

  • Incorrect engine oil filter
  • Engine oil level low
  • Insufficient oil pressure due to a mechanical failure in the oiling system
Engine inspection at CQEC has revealed some instances where the oil filter cap had become disassembled, often due to incorrect filter removal. The internal oil filter cap parts can then get lodged within the filter and restrict oil flow, resulting in engine failure. If you encounter P1524 or another fault code related to the engine lubrication system, be sure to inspect the oil filter for part separation within the oil filler cap.

If an aftermarket filter has failed or previous service caused the oil filter cap to become lodged and restrict oil flow, the failure is not the result of a warrantable defect with the engine. The customer may need to review the failure with the provider of the aftermarket filter or maintenance service.
