2000 TJ transmission problem

Hi all,
My good lady has a 2000 TJ Manual 4 ltr.
In the past few months there has been a whine getting progressively worse we believe from the gearbox (it has done 245000km). We had it looked over and consequently the rear diff needed new bearings amongst other things however the whine is still there most noticeable around 80kmh (60mph) it seems to be there in or out of gear and when the clutch is depressed.
Can anyone suggest anything or would this be a new/overhauled transmission. If that is the case what is the likely cost.

Unfortunately I would not be able to give you a cost estimate on a new or used transmission. Have you checked to the fluid level? When was the last time it was drained and serviced? When was the last time the clutch was replaced. Could be a through-out bearing or could be the syncronizing gears. Hard to tell. I had a Ford Ranger which did the same thing and ended up having to replace the transmission because the bearings were burned to the point the melted to the case. The reason they overheated was a slight transmission leak which drained the case.

[Edit] Just talked to a buddy who has a TJ and said he had the same thing happen to his and replaced the clutch and through-out bearings.

Hi Will,
The gearbox was checked alongside the rear diff. No leaks etc. The fluid level was fine and it was changed in Jan this year. The clutch has not been replaced since we have had it (2 years) and not having service history at hand can't tell you yet when it was last done if ever.

Trying to track down a Jeep gearbox specialist here (pretty difficult ) however used to assemble the gearboxes and re builds for Jeep before going solo. So if I can get hold of him will get a look see.

this is classic throw out bearing noise.
you have to remove the transmission to replace it so buy a clutch while you are in there.

When my throw out bearing went out in my 00 Tj it made a real loud clanking noise when on the clutch pedal.

Just an update.
Transfer box was corroded and full of crud so causing part of the issue. Rear diff bearings are still whining so going back to workshop to be re-checked seeing as they were supposed :naw: to have fixed this and hopefully sorted.
After that transmission to be dropped to check throwout bearing.

When the rear diff bearings and pinion bearings have been replaced does backlash need to be re-calibrated. I know this might be a noob question but those with a greater knowledge than I please confirm this or not.

Ok,
Just to let peeps know.
Turns out that the rear axle is slightly bent. However, the first workshop had not reset the gears correctly (pretty pissed off with them) so everything was re calibrated and along with the transfer box clean up the "whine" has cleared up.
Now the bitch is to probably get a new rear axle which over here could take some doing.

Now the bitch is to probably get a new rear axle which over here could take some doing.

The type of bend may make a fix possible. Recently a friend had a bent tube on his D44 rear on his TJ (a welded on bracket was over heated and cooled too fast thus the tweak). The shop cut off the flange and bearing end of the housing and recentered it. Seems as though this is a common way to fix minor bends (he had jigs for all sorts of axles). All seems to be working fine.

Ok,
That would be good. However, finding people here who know what they are really doing rather than just saying and guessing will be fun !!
I really wish that a group of guys would take the plunge and come across from the States and set up a workshop here.....they would make a killing !
