35's do great on the stock 17's. I would recommend a set of spidertrax wheel spacers. I opted for the 1.75 inch over the 1.5 because I wanted the widest stance possible.
Don't let local shops lie to you. They will say 35's won't fit on a 17x7.5 but they are wrong it actually works rather well.

Yes its not the height but the width that matters. 37's and 35's are te same width....usually. If you get into toyo's and i think mud grapplers on 17 inch rims you will see 13.5 wide and that should not be ran on a stock rim.
Also make sure you are talking about the stock 17's not the stock 16's.

never had any issues when i ran my set, can also air down to 15 or less safely.
