Fire Extinguisher

Hey everyone,

Looked around and couldn't seem to find a dedicated thread to this. What do y'all recommend for a fire extinguisher for the jeep? Pretty basic but there are a lot of brands out there. Also, what have y'all found to be the best mounting methods and brackets? I like moby's mounting on the rear roll bars but would like to see what other good options there may be.

Thanks

Ha, I've been following your build, looks great! It's funny, everyone seems to have a fire extinguisher (and for good reason) and yet there's very little information about them floating around!

Poison Spyder makes a roll-bar mount, but you'd still have to buy the extinguisher. Haven't seen them in real life, but if they are anything like their grab handles I have, they will be well made and beefy.

Go to a local marine/boat shop and pick up a boat extinguisher, they're around $20-25. The way I figure it, if it's made to sit out in the sun and be bounced around on a boat, it'll be ok on a jeep.

There are a few things to know before buying a fire extinguisher;

There are three basic types of fire extinguishers that are made in order to put out fires of all sorts.
Water based fire extinguishers (type A) are filled with pressurized water to put out fire from combustible fires originating from wood or paper.
Dry chemical fire extinguishers (type B) are filled with a dry chemical that smothers fires originating from gas or oil. Water will not put out these fires, and would in fact make them worse.
Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers (type C) are used to extinguish electrical fires. It is important to have the correct fire extinguisher on hand to quickly put out fires that may occur.

There are alot of good combination type B/C fire extinguishers in various sizes available almost anywhere. Marine stores, home centers, etc.
They make the best vehicle fire extinguishers in my opinion. They can put out a gas fire and/or an electrical fire if needed.

And a big bonus; They look cool as shit strapped to the roll bar with the top down.

Except that if you use a particle extinguisher near your engine, you will have major contamination issues with particulate in your engine... It's better than a full blown vehicle fire, but its not better than just a wet engine (water ext) or a cold engine (CO2 ext). I will personally only be carrying a CO2. If its good enough for the 1700+ degree heat treat furnaces at work, its good enough for my jeep.

You could be right. I have never used one (extinguisher) personally on a car/engine fire, but I have seen the results from using a type B and it's a mess.

I just picked up a couple from Wally world. The auto marine ones.

Are those type b/c? I think I'll be hitting up Wally's tonight! This is the only Jeep I haven't had one in and I think about it a lot when I'm on the trail.

Yes. Look in the hardware section for the larger white ones. The ones in the automotive section are smaller.

I found a rechargeable abc type at Meijer's for 17.99$ Now just need to buy some 3" hose clamps.
