As a few of you so kindly suggested, the first mod is in and drum roll....it's a fire extinguisher.

To be exact it is a HalGuard HG250 in black mounted to a Drake OffRoad Fire Extinguisher Mount paired with their JK Front Seat Mount.

Install is very straight forward although if the bolts on your front seats were as tight as mine were, a breaker bar would be very handy to help with the 18mm socket.

You know, I can't rally figure out how many are out there. Every time I go to Evo I wonder where they all are coming from. Someday sit seems like everyone has DTD and 60/80's. I guess that's just a very small, rare sampling.

I know right, lot to do though still before then.

Radios are one of the next items to tackle. I think I am going to try and run a Cobra 29 CB and a Yaesu Ft-2900R HAM both mounted from the center section of the cage. I probably just need to buy them both and mock it up to see if it will work.

In August 2014 my wife and I loaded up the Jeep for some much need time away with an end goal of northwest Montana. Below is a few photos of the highlights of our trip which was 12 days and covered over 2,200 miles including 200 miles off pavement. We stopped in Zion National Park, Toole, UT to see some great off road racing, a couple of historic places in Idaho, one working cattle ranch in Montana, and plenty of time in the Flathead Valley Area.

On our way to Las Vegas, California's Solar Generator Plant. These things are extremely bright and cannot be described unless you see them in person.
99173

Sunset on the I15 near the Nevada, Arizona and Utah border.
99176

View from our hotel room patio in Springfield, UT at the west gate of Zion National Park.
99182

Zion National Park photos. Truly remarkable beauty and we can't wait to get back and explore the area.
99185991869918799188

Stopped in at Toole, UT to see the Discount Tire race team in action at the Ultra 4 Championship. What an awesome event. Mel Wade was definitely fastest in class but an unfortunate time with a fuel line resulted in a 3rd place finish. Even with torrential rains the previous night, Mel ran Nitto's new Exo Grapplers and they were extremely impressive in both the mud and the rocks.

The 4500 class race was very impressive with a ton of action. The highlight of the day though was the big boys in the 4400 class. Shannon Campbell put on quite a show and was racing for the lead when a touch of wheels sent him head over heels six times.
99190

99191

Three class podium drivers of the day.
99192

A stop in at EBR-1, the worlds first nuclear reactor first established in Idaho in 1947. We stopped in here randomly and it turned out to be a very worthwhile tour through history.
99194

Shutdown!
99195

32 panes of glass used for experimental viewing.
99196

Next we stopped at The Craters of the Moon National Park. This place seriously is like leaving Idaho for the moon!
99197

Required selfie.
99198

99199

On to the Ranch to set up camp for the night. That is, if the locals will let us pass.

99216

Exploring the Blacktail Forest area west of Flathead Lake in Montana. Wild Bill Blacktail OHV area was built recently by a local group and climbs almost 4,000ft for some great views of the area. Mostly just a gravelly trail with some pretty extreme man built obstacles that would definitely make for fun day of play with others. If you go, be sure to be aware of bears as we saw plenty of signs of recent activity.
99217

A lot of the obstacles are built for UTVs and buggys and would make for some challenges to a fullsize JKU.
99218

After completing the trail, a stop in at the Tamarack Brewing Company in Lakeside, MT to see an old friend from home who is the brewer and have a great lunch on their patio by the creek.
99219

Another round of golf at Whitefish South Golf Course.
99220

An afternoon of hanging out at Whitefish Lake.

99231

A beautiful sunset was the perfect way to finish off one epic trip for us.
99232

What a way to end a great summer of getting out and exploring the outdoors and making new friends. We love how much our Jeep has enabled us to get out and explore the massive and impressive west. In over 2,200 miles, loaded down, on road and off road, our JK took a beating and kept going without so much as a hint of trouble. We easily traveled at over 80mph on the interstates and 75mph + on some washed out gravel roads, with fuel economy of about 14mpg. Our trip showed us again just how capable the new Jeeps are, not just off roading, but enabling you to do almost anything.

We can't wait to see what this fall and beyond bring us and hopefully, maybe we might run into some of you out there.

50qt fridge will fit either on top of the slide or still in the 40side of the folded seat.

Intend to mostly put it on the slide. Going to mount about 12 tie downs around the top.

Seats and factory carpet are all back in plus a healthy dose of dynamat and dynapad.

It's for both. I did it more for heat. We have been chasing some sort of heat issue for about 5-6 months now.

It's has helped the heat quite a bit and you can certainly tell now where the pad/mat/nothing is.

As far as noise reduction goes, there is a difference. It has made it feel a bit more disconnected from the road noise but it is still definitely there. I've been told the real noise reduction would happen when we line the doors.

Thanks bud! We need to get out again soon. Even if it's just to JV or BB.

Past month has seen a few thousand extra miles on the Irish Jeep. Started with a birthday camping trip for the wife and a friend to Toroweap and Sand Hollow which was a complete blast. Some last minute drama before we hit the road but it all worked out. Lots of romping around and good friends. Although camping was a bit cold. One of our friends from the trip put together a video montage of the trip.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sF_JZVOGKL8&feature=youtu.be

More recently, we were fortunate to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime to help support the Discount Tire Off Road Evolution Baja 1000 team. It was our first time driving down to Mexico for any matter and what an we opening experience. I don't think we slept very much and ended up on an interesting excursion which threw quite a challenge at the DTD. Kings got quite a workout but at the end of the day we didn't have one issue. Wish the race would have gone better for Evo 1, but the Wades are class all around.

175121

Before these two trips we had the ARB drawer installed and I can honestly say it is one of the best mods we have done. It is pricey but it is absolutely solid.

Drove a lakebed at Dusk on a trail by ourselves miles from anything even remotely resembling help and it was about as cool as it gets. (Got to figure out how to load the video).

Thanks to Kristen and Adam for riding with.

It was an added option on the other 2015 Willys we had. For the 2 door it wasn't standard and added $1,295 to the Window Sticker.

Been a while since Iíve been on here at all much less posted anything. Iíve been hesitating making this post in hopes that issues would work themselves out as issues typically do, but alas, the troubles with Motech continue to worsen.

As I had previously posted, we had Motech perform a full swap with their kit at their shop in Vegas. The initial conversations, drop off and work flow seemed great. They even went so far as to help re-run some fire suppression lines that had gotten bent from body movement over previous years.

About half way through the swap, communication pretty much ceased. Communication there on out has only occurred when I have prodded. I was able to get the Jeep back in a relatively timely manner and the extra power is great for sure.

Small issues began pretty much immediately. A transmission leak had occurred during the builders test drive and was supposedly fixed but occurred again on the way home from Vegas. Next, on the WAYALIFE Whiskey Wunderlust trip, conditions were very dry and silty, but the amount of dirt let in through the Motech supplied air filter (to which I added the manufacturers pre-filter) was ridiculous. Decent amounts of dirt could be seen in the intake runners after one trip in the desert.

Motechís response with that any off roading in dusty conditions really should require a snorkel. After the WAYALIFE trip, I had a business trip which forced me away for a week. I came home to work on a new air filter to find the battery was completely drained after only one week. It was drained to a point where it could not be jumped or re-charged. Since then all draws have been checked etc and it has killed another 4 batteries with the max time before a battery is completely drawn being about 4-5 days. Motech responder month ago now that they think it is a CAN issue and would send a new one. A month later and I am still killing batteries and have no new module.

In my opinion, the motech swap kits have some smart quality features, but in a general sense, they are not built for anything but ďlightĒ off-roaders to street drivers. During the swap, winch power was re-routed to ground out on the body, air filtration is not situated, fuel mileage is about 9mpg in overdrive, most recently, we suffered a massive overheating and coolant boil over on a 85 degree day with minimal load.

I know others on this forum and elsewhere have success stories with Motech, but these are my experiences and I would not recommend the Motech kit to anyone at this point.

I thought Motech was pretty solid. But based on this and what others have chimed in with IDK. I just bought a 241OR Tcase off of these guys and I can honestly say that it was the hardest money I've ever spent with any company.
Over 10 emails and phone calls were made before I could complete the sale. I asked for tracking - nothing. It showed up with no packing slip and I got no receipt. Granted, this is not an engine swap but what I spent on the Tcase was pure profit for these guys and they seemed like they couldn't be bothered. Shame.

I don't have any personal experience with Motech so I can't chime in on that point. I will say, however, that parasitic draw is not uncommon in Jeeps (even without motor swaps) and especially in any vehicle that has aftermarket electrical components of any kind. If I was you, I'd try to figure out where the draw was coming from and I would take the twenty seconds to disconnect my battery if I wasn't going to drive my Jeep for several days. Hell, you could put a battery disconnect right at the battery so you don't even have to hassle with breaking out your tools. (Also not a bad security device for an expensive Jeep like yours, especially if you have a locking hood).

If you are having issues specific to the actual swap, I certainly hope Motech resolves those issues.

Same here, I thought they were solid and it seemed to start that way, but has diverged. Along similar lines, I was quite surprised to pick up at the completion of the swap, and receive absolutely ZERO paperwork. No paperwork on products, including a brand new GM crate LS3, no paperwork on user guides or service intervals etc.

I agree, constant draw is just a fact of life in all modern cars. Thing is this is drawing way too much, way too fast and no accessories have been changed since the swap. Everything has been tested and disconnected since and nothing has been found to draw leaving on the Motech harness. To be honest, previously I could previously leave the Jeep for a month or two or more and it would fire right up.

I understand everyoneís response to just disconnect the battery in some shape or form but itís not the point on what is a not insignificant vehicle investment that should be sorted out properly. Motech has already said they believe it is an issue on their end, but they canít seem to figure out how to get it fixed for me is the disappointing fact. Had I known all along, that it would be two months to get the new units in (that would still be a horrible response), I may have decided to try and find some extra slack in the cables so they could be disconnected more easily, but that is not what the information has been.

With the recent overheating issues, the only response was, you have lights and a winch in front so thatís the problem. Basically, nope, no way it was or could have been anything on our end, end of conversation.

LoL...

You have lights and a winch which were on the vehicle when the swap was done... and that's the obvious problem but no one brought it up to you? Haha, bullshit on their end with an obvious not our problem response.

Ohhh and sorry with a V8 you can't have a winch... blocks too much air flow... but that was probably in the documentation which you were never given lol.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck/experience. At least they made a nice video of your jeep on the trail to use as promotional material and get more business while not resolving your issues.

Sorry about your issues. MoTech pioneered the LS(and LT) JK swaps. With new tech comes new issues and we learn from it. I've never been one to dodge the bullet so I will try and address your concerns.

On the early CAN modules with some operating systems the the JK CAN network did not power down properly which caused a draw. This has been addressed with a firmware update and the draw has been eliminated. You are on the list to get a replacement module and I apologize it has taken so long they are in short supply. We have 50 coming in with some improvements including customer programmable features which I feel you should get.

We run a throw away filter with the conversion as standard. The customer has the choice to replace it with any 3.5" dual cone shorty they prefer. This filter works well for general use but for severe conditions a K&N with a sock or ultimately a snorkel would be a better choice just as with a stock JK filter. In dusty conditions the oiled filter will need to be cleaned regularly and due to the cost is not disposable.

We pioneered PWM fans in the JK and we support several variations. PWM fans are powerful and cool well but have limitations. A PWM fan has a duty cycle that if it is exceeded will cause the fan to go into a thermal shutdown. In a heavy JK the PWM fan can only run so long so hard before it will shut down so it is very important to keep airflow through the grille. You may not recall but we discussed this, at 75-80 mph with obstructions in front of the grille the airflow is deflected away from the grille and over the hood. In this scenario at some point a thermal shutdown will occur and you will have to wait for it too cool off. Like any other V8 conversion the grille must remain open to allow adequate airflow. Sink the winch or whatever you have to do to keep airflow adequate.

MoTech is based on making our customers happy, money is second. We make mistakes and do our best to correct them. While our response time is not the fastest it will get done. Over the last decade we have upgraded an upgraded our older builds at no cost to the customer. A V8 conversion is complex and has many potential points of failure. Your build had many interferences which did add to the build time and you were not charged for giving us the extra time. Your JK ran good and it will run better when we get an updated tune in it after break in.

We rarely see transmission leaks it is usually the transfer case that leaks. In many cases when the front input seal is removed the bore is scratched and if not smoothed out and sealed it will leak even with a new seal, we see this all the time. If that is the case it will be fixed.

As the originator of the LS JK swap we have over 300 on the road currently. I believe the vast majority of our customers can attest to the after sales support we offer. The issues you have are known and correctable and again I wish we responded faster. As far as getting more airflow into your grille or running a different filter we can help you with that. Overall the package is solid, for running in extreme conditions like silty, dusty roads, or at 80mph with airflow blocked mods can be made to accommodate.

Lol....

In Robbieís defense, he did state his opinion that lights and winches block too much airflow from almost day 1 of talking to him. But that is one of the reasons I elected to go with the biggest and best radiator possible and the best fan setup possible and a tried and true aluminum block LS for the best possible chances of running cool. And it was absolutely solid up until one hill two weekends ago. We cruised up the Baker grade chasing Overlander in his wifeís stock JK at well over traffic speed without the temps moving an inch. We the weekend in Nevada with you guys without it moving at all.

My believe is that there was an air bubble during the radiator initial fill that didnít cause any issues until we finally put a little load on it and it locked the coolant system, because we were almost two gallons low and definitely did not loose much more than a liter before we shut it down. In regards to the fan, as far as I can tell, it never stopped working.

Right because it makes complete sense that I should spend $20,000 on a motor swap in order to form my own opinion about them. I have seen Bubba's issues first hand regardless. I traveled multiple times, prior to the Texas Exodus trip last year, to his place (3 hours away) for him to work on my rig while Warpig was on jack stands due to Motech issues. Not to mention another shop in Houston uses them and they have also had issues from what I have heard, not seen for myself. Talk to Bubba if you need absolute specific issues as I have forgotten but some of them related to mocan and electronics IIRC.

Right now it’s probably dead again. Intent is “yeah I’ll take if for spin one night” and end up home late multiple times and here we are.

I had a parasitic draw issue with my JK6 build a long time ago...we installed dash mounted kill switch to a large relay connected to both of my batteries (originally for safety in case of a roll)...but it took care of my battery drain issues, especially since this Jeep is in WA and I spend a considerable amount of time in Hawaii...something to think about...

The JK has cooling challenges. As Hemi guys know just running a massive radiator is not the solution. The LS being more compact and all aluminum does cool better than other engines; however, were still talking 400+ HP and high compression. The LS as mentioned also runs a reverse cooling system so if not properly purged an air bubble will form at the top of the heads and cause the coolant to stall. A steamport is added to purge the air out but here is a common scenario.

Worn out radiator cap. You drive around and coolant is slowly pushed into the overflow bottle and onto the ground. When you shut the engine off the system contracts and air is sucked into the system because the bottle is sucked dry. This little amount of air can cause the bubble which stalls the coolant flow. Signs of this are coolant on the ground with no visible leaks. The simple solution is too run a good quality 16 psi cap like the Stant 10233.

The JK's big issue with cooling is airflow, we have a small engine compartment with poor flow. The LS being smaller than the Hemi has an advantage. We're trying to pull low pressure air into a high pressure zone which can be difficult.

The thicker the core the more restrictive it can be. Also high efficiency cores with a high fin count can restrict airflow. Years ago we developed our 52 mm dual pass core; the dual pass core gives the coolant more time in the radiator. We spent a lot of time in the Vegas heat figuring out what combination works best airflow vs capacity. We run a manual transmission AC condenser and get rid of the stock condenser with trans cooler which is next to useless. We run an aftermarket condenser that has a lower fin count that doesn't plug up so easy from dust and debris on the trail like the high efficiency stock condenser does.

So what it comes down to is airflow. The largest radiator is not any good if there is not enough airflow to move the heat out. Many guys are surprised when we remove their 4 or 5 row radiators and install our 2 row 52mm radiator and they run cooler. The Camaro SS fan and Pentstar fans are capable of moving a lot of air. These fans are designed to run a medium duty cycle and as long as air is coming through the grille they will stay around 20-30% commanded. Under a load these fans can pull 70 amps which will cool the engine but if you keep your foot into it up a grade and there is no airflow through the grille to assist the fan at some point the fan will shut down which is better than failing. We normally see this on heavy JK's running at high speed. We had one customer running 100 mph and his 3" stinger 2 feet in front of the bumper was deflecting the air away from the grille. Running some cardboard to redirect the air put air through the grille and lowered the demand on the fan so he could run contentious. So there is no free lunch with cooling in a JK. The 52mm radiator and Camaro SS fan will cool it, but only so long so the airflow through the grille must be maintained as intended.

If this is the build I'm thinking of he received a pre-production prototype CAN module instead of the proven MoTech module. It was agreed when the new production module was available it would need to be upgraded. Since that build this same customer wanted to do another build but we were running behind on kits with 13 on order. Bubba was a nice guy and seemed talented but we shouldn't be judged on prototype components; we are 4 generations ahead of that original module. Customers with the current CAN module don't even know it's there since it has been rationalized. But there was a short time we had to go through a learning curve on CAN in kits. Our current module that Irish will get has dip switches so the customer can configure it to his JK without programming required. The new generation will have a USB interface.
