Soft top fail!

While on vaca in Hawaii I could not help but notice all the rental jeeps. A few things struck me as odd:

1) a lot of families rent 2 doors. I assume this is to save money, but what a pain in the ass to deal with for 4 or 5 people.

2) several rental companies bought hard tops for their rental jeeps. What a bummer to rent a jeep hoping for a top off experience and getting stuck with a hard top.

3) many of those that got a soft top had no idea how to use them...

We always try to rent a jeep when we travel. We have done this on many Caribbean islands. Often times, the rental place warns you against lowering the sot top and threatens a fine if you do so. I think they purchase soft top vehicles for the lower price but fear tourists will ruin the tops by using them the wrong way. Or, the interior getting hammered by the frequent thunderstorm. We typically lower the top anyway. But, we know how to do it. And, usually put it back better than it was before. What we find funny on most Jeep rentals is the amount of damage to the plastic bumpers. Those things are typically trashed. The rental Jeep is what lead us to purchase our first Jeep. So, hats off to the rental Jeep. Let's see the pics. We will try to post some up.

I've seen people around here with similar problems and have been tempted to stop them and show'em how it should be.

Frank and I rented a TJ about 5-6 years ago in Cancun and asked them to take the top down for us before we took it. We drove it to the Mayan Riviera. When we parked it that night we couldn't for the life of us get it to go back up and connect at the top so we just gave up. We figured--it's under the trees right? It won't be so bad. :yup: Of course that night they had a major storm -- I think it took us about 3 days to get all the water out of the cup holders :cheesy:

Awesome! At least you had time to dry it out. On the road to the Maui airport we often see people on the side of the road putting up their tops (jeeps and otherwise) in a torrential downpour.

I believe the used JK I bought Friday was a rental from Hawaii. It has Hawaii inspection stickers and all.

Mine too! I was a little reluctant to purchase a rental, but it only had 21 K miles on it and a quick inspection checked out okay. I've had it four years now. Been a really good jeep overall.

So what did you use to remove the inspection sticker? When I peeled it off, it left the background that reads "void"

My soft-top failure story happened at 13,000 ft, the top of Imogene Pass, CO. I had just the sunrider portion back and forgot to strap it down . A strong gust o' wind came along and WHAM, the thing flew forward and hard in an instant. Luckily no-one's fingers were in the way...A shot of the crew post soft-top fail....everyone okay, lol

Hmmmm, mine never had the inspection sticker, or maybe removed by dealer. The salesman told me it was from Hawaii. He had two other JKUs from the same place. The build sheet I got from Chrysler also shows a Hawaii Excise Tax. Where was the sticker at?

They had 2 other Jeeps besides mine from Hawaii too...

The sticker is on the passenger side under the tail light. I just don't want to scratch the paint.

Rented a topless YJ on the tropical Hilo side of the big Island. It rains there all the time. Spent the whole day in glorious sun while everyone else wrestled their tops or drove around in cars. Made for lively discussion at the Tiki bar that night... What I remember of the conversation anyway.:thumb:
