Almost one year owning a Jeep/Jeep Dysmorphic Disorder?

MTG

Caught the Bug
So after almost one year of owning a jeep I'd thought I'd share a few thoughts of my evolution of never owning a 4wd, to thinking about a BB puck system, to where I am now. Feel free to stop reading, I'm mainly killing a few spare minutes as there is nothing new to read on the forums.

Perhaps you are familiar with the term body Dysmorphic Disorder? Well, I am wondering if anyone else suffers from jeep dysmorphic disorder like I'm afraid I do. Unless I am parked next to a stock jeep I feel that mine is just another run of the mill wrangler. I see jeeps driving and I think "Wow! That is a nice jeep. Wish mine was that nice." Don't even get me started on what happens when I see Moby, Rubicat, EVO 1 or GCM 2's ride. ;)

I have become a different person in the almost 12 months I've owned a jeep. I am on the forums (yes, plural) any chance I get. Literally the first and last thing I do each day. I've done most of my mods myself (or with Sharkey) whereas I might have changed some windshield wipers before that. I never even owned a set of after market wheels and now chuckle when mine get rock rash on them. I have absolutely no problem taking a sawzall to my $36k+ jeep, let alone a drill or dremel. My friends and coworkers think I'm nuts every Monday when I come in and tell them what I did "this time."

But it's not just limited to the physical appearance. Today on my flight home from Vegas I literally stared out the window looking at dirt roads, mentally took notes so I could hopefully map them and eventually drive on them. I have a checklist of runs/events I'd like to do/attend (thanks no doubt to wayoflife's videos) that is a mile long and growing.

So let's hear it? Normal, normal for a jeeper (assuming I can call myself one) or just stone cold crazy? Should we try to get an entry in the APA DSM-V (or whatever volume they are on)?

Absolutely, totally normal, but only from the viewpoints of another Jeeper. Otherwise, those without, wouldn't understand.

Agreed. In my circle of friends most of us own jeeps. To them ist pefrectly sane drilling holes in the body of your brand new car to mount skins and sliders. To people I work with I'm bonkers and am ruining a $30k "car", not to mention what they think of the places we take said $30k "car"

Completely normal! Every time I pass a dirt trail and can't make it on it at that moment I try to remember it. I dont want to leave one trail around me undone or at least unattempted hah and once you own a Jeep other non Jeep owners will start to question your sanity hah its all a part of the Way of Life!

i believe it is normal. I have never owned a jeep, always been into sport cars. However a change in the family (Son) had me selling my car and getting a jeep. I now eat, sleep, and breathe jeeps. Now when i look at yours and all other's you mentioned, i just count down the days till i graduate school so i can afford all my parts. But untill the upcoming summer the jeep will stay stock, except for the the 17" stock wheels and procal i just upgraded to. I might do some homemade rocksliders though ;).

I vote normal!

My jeep is only about 7-8 weeks old. I haven't had a 4wd in many years. The males in my family are very mechanically oriented. My dad had a garage and then an auto parts store. I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty. However, due to the fact that my family all lives about 1000 miles away, I find myself (a woman with grown and almost grown children!) taking auto mechanic and suspension courses to make sure I can take care of my jeep myself. Only the other jeep owners I know (and my children) understand.

I vote for normal as well. There really is a Jeep thing...and unless you own one, you really don't understand it.

My wife bought one...and after driving hers for a couple of months I promptly sold my truck and bought my own.

There's also a real sense of community...I had to run out to the jeep to put the top up when a flash rainstorm broke out, and another jeep owner ran out in the storm to help me get the windows in. We were drenched...at work...and smiling.

LOL i think said "other jeep owner" posted directly above me...how about that :)

MTG your normal, I've always owned trucks until my Jeep (My wife's had Grand Cherokee's and Liberty's, but that's not the same.) and when friends ask about my Jeep I start rambling and they just don't understand. I talk about what I want to do to it and they'll look at my wife and she just shakes her head. My mods have been minor to this point but I've bought the Plastic dip to do my rims and hinges but not having a garage and as much as its been raining haven't had time to do it.

NORMAL!!!

My wife laughs at me cause I don't see pasture or forest.. I see trails and things to climb over. :clap2:

Also I looked at my wife a few days ago as we sat in the Jeep under the carport with the doors and top off. I said "Honey. We have the most expensive lawn chairs in the world.... and the coolest." I realized every time we sit outside we skip the 2 really nice lawn chairs and go for the Jeep.

It's just a WAYALIFE!!

Phew!

This is a relief. I'm normal. lol

It's only been a few months for me but JDD's set in.

Is there a treatment? First step is admitting it or something? Is it a problem if you don't admit to it?

Someone should start a support group...oh yah...that'd be all the other Jeeps that are wavin' at me.

WAYALIFE.

Mike, you have accurately described me in a nutshell!

Here is what I have learned over the years while owning a Jeep...

Some of the warning signs that a person may have JDD include:

Engaging in repetitive and time-consuming behaviors, such as looking at reflections of the Jeep from other vehicles, day dreaming about mods, and trying to figure out ways to finance an EVO DTD.

Constantly asking for reassurance that it’s perfectly normal to want/buy excessive amounts of Jeep accessories.

Repeatedly measuring or touching the perceived defective lift kit or steering component.

Experiencing problems at work or socially, or in relationships due to the inability to stop focusing on the Jeep.

Feeling self-conscious and not wanting to go out in public, or feeling anxious when around other people with extremely built Jeeps.

Repeatedly consulting with Jeep specialists, such as Mel @ EVO or Dave @ Northridge 4x4, to find ways to improve the Jeep’s appearance.

JDD=It's a Jeep thing!

ps. Mike, do you know any good shrinks? I think we need professional help...

First and foremost, my apologies for now just taking a look at this thread but initially.....

Yes, familiar with BDD. Yes, I have JDD (ask my wife,....no please don't ask my wife) I actually have a fascination of almost all forms of extreme anything, from human physical performance to Motorsports. Even though I own GCM 2's ride , EVOJEEP, I am still in awe of Moby, EVO1, RubiCat, and many others anytime I'm parked next to them. It's always a distinguished honor in a way only we know how to appreciate. But all of the owners are always just a regular dude like me, and that's the best part.

Becoming different ain't bad, just never forget where you came from. Just don't ever become a douche, good family and friends will keep you grounded :thumb:

You know the miles I fly in a year :icon_crazy: I do the exact same thing flying over all the western and southwestern states, especially if I have wheeled the areas and recognize trails. It's awesome.

I have had probably a dozen psyche evaluations over my career, and to quote the majority of the Special Operations Psychologists "you are abnormally normal". Mike, I think this is also my diagnosis for you. Now go finish your damn jeep for the JKX.

Peace out

Hi.

My name is Frank.

And I too suffer from JDD.....

It started in January of 2012. I became a proud new owner of a JK and thought I had a pretty damn nice JK.

Then I saw a video from a guy, goes by the name of Way of Life, maybe you heard of him? I saw all kinds of knarly JKs like Moby, GCM2, EVO1.... It was all downhill from there.

I've spent countless hours, saving, researching, buying, modding, researching some more, spending, modding. It's terrible, I know. :( I've got my friends buying JKs. They ask me about mine saying I influenced them, but I never seem content with her. I wheel her, she performs and always increases my faith in her capabilities. She never lets me down.

Is there a cure? Shall I seek professional help?
;)

My name is Frank, and I too suffer from JDD.

I made my wife read this whole thread. I had to make sure she understood that "my problem" was not the only one out there. I too became obsessed with "JEEP PORN" ,as we like to call it, numerous catalogs lay around the house. I have the JK forum, Project Jk, and WAYALIFE websites bookmarked. I really do have a problem. BUT I SURE DO LIKE IT! :2thumbsup:

Oh, then I start watching videos from this guy WAYOLIFE. Wow! If I was not already hooked, I am now. I have watched them so many times. I go through every picture they take on their trips and wish I was there. Maybe some day........ before I go broke.

And the looking for off road trails is habit forming. I have almost got whiplash several times trying to view a trail while driving.

Glad to know there are others like me.

My name is mjhau02 and I have JDD.

I have the pleasure of having a teenage son that shares that has that same need. We often leave early morning and spend the day just wandering around dirt roads. :thumb:

I too suffer from this disorder and there are no meds to cure except to purchase more mods! This is my social folder on my iPad and notice my background photo
