In CA it is the law to have a front licence plate. You could be pulled over for not having one. With that said....I don't have one and haven't been pulled over for it. They make mounting brackets for winch fairleads that you can get to be compliant though. Just haven't done that myself yet.

DIY front mount

This is a mount I made with some items from the local home improvement store.

Materials.jpg

These are the material used. You will need 2 packages of clamps.

Clamp Before.jpg

The first thing to do is put the clamp on the roller head and use a hammer to reshape them to fit tightly around the roller

Long side Clamp after.jpg

Short side clamp after.jpg

Short side of clamp after

Clamp before and after.jpg

Cut steel to size.jpg

Cut steel to proper size

4 clamps mounted.jpg

you will want to mount one side of the clamps on the steel plate with the long side of the clamp towards the outside. Test fit this on the roller head and mark the location for the other clamps.

Test Fit.jpg

Test fit the final assembly and paint it when your done

Final product.jpg

Final product. The mount is very difficult to install on the rollers because the clamps are so tight. You will need to secure one side at a time to get on both rollers. I been running it for a few weeks and haven't had any problems with it.

Hope this helps

Something else you can do is get the mag light holders. They fit a roller fairlead perfectly. Mount it to the plate and call it a day. Think I paid 5.99 for the pair.

Just another option in case you're interested.
I used a mag lite flashlight mount and a license plate bracket from auto parts store

California Vehicle Code 5200 covers the need to have two license plates mounted when two are issued by DMV.

My son carries his in his rig. If he gets pulled very he has it. Not sure if it will keep him out of a tickets or not.

It won't keep him out of a ticket, but its a correctable violation (fix it ticket).

I have ran without a front license plate for over a year and didn't have an issue...then a state trooper with nothing to do decided to pull me over about a week ago on my way to work for not having one...got a warning...needless to say, I am now in the system and will be more closely watched. But i have not put a plate on the front, seeing if i can get by. but i did but a license plate mount from EVO just in case.
