With 4 kids and a 23' camper trailer; we needed something with towing capacity AND ample seating (with room for 2x boosters and 2x car seats). So, we bought this back in 2008 (of course, the twins weren't born yet) and have enjoyed it ever since!

I never got the fj appeal. 3 wipers..can't go over a mild parking lot speed bump without hitting max flex. The only upside is ( in Washington at least ) I could sell my JK and buy 3 used fjs. There value around here is nothing.

I think if I had to do it again, for an SUV/Family wagon, I think I'd get one of these. All of the problems you mention pretty much sound like my '05 Grand Cherokee. And I'd venture a guess that the FJ gets better than 10mpg.

For off road though, definitely wrangler.

Grand Cherokee's have a decent 4x4 and snow capabilities. Fjs just don't look even safe to me. And if you go 2004 and step down from WK to WJ. You can mod :p. My old wj was lifted on 35's. Loved it. Nothing like wheeling with heated seats. Ac. 4 doors. Power everything. Back before the JKU came around that is :p

Yeah, I definitely miss the Bug. It was a 58', first of the 'big windows'. Had no gas gauge, so I had to lift the 'hood', take off the gas cap, and shake the car to see how much gas I had! I didn't want to add one and ruin the original look of it. Fun though, like driving a go cart.

Over the years I've had a '63 and "late model" '73. The best thing about them was I could fix anything that broke. The '73 had a full set of studded snows that were fearless in the Colorado snow. It was our ski car. We'd load up four people, skis, all our shit for a weekend, and head into the mountains. It took us a lot longer to climb some of the passes but we never got turned back by weather. Too bad "The Thing" wasn't 4WD.:yup:

@ Linebacker, that's awesome. My dad had a Baja bug back in the day, always amazed me where those things are capable of going! Loved the 'thing' also, if they were 4wd Id definitely build one! Always wanted the type 166 schwimmer too. That's my problem, I just want too many vehicles!

Here's the YJ. I had actually been looking for a go-kart to run around the farm, but found I could get an older Jeep for about the same price. 4wd, power steering, power brakes and heat were all added benefits that made me end up with the Jeep over a Go-Kart.

Yeah, I sold my non-JK. When the JK is in the shop, I'm stuck using the 'go-fasters'. What can I say, they take me where the jeep can't.

My Mom's style of camping: "Drive until the car gets stuck, hike until you find a good spot, pitch a tent facing the most beautiful view." "...essential camping gear: good shoes, your tent, a shovel and a roll of chain link (for getting the car unstuck)."
-Julie Elliott.

This last part hopefully doesn't apply to my JK, and if it does its a badass camping spot that I will photograph and post in destinations and beyond.

Stuck with 3.6, has plenty of power and 24mpg highway. You really cannot justify the extra cost for the diesel unless you drive a lot of miles. It is an awesome vehicle, my wife can't stop talking about it.

My '95 YJ 4cyl/5-spd. It's great for bopping around town and running the trails around the Big Horn Mtns. It's currently getting a set of 4.88's installed to help turn the 33's (probably 35's soon). My friends have gone to side by sides and so far I've been able to go almost everywhere they do, mine cost 1/3 of theirs and I run mine year-round. Love my little Yeep. Once the kids are graduated we're planning to trade the YJ for a JKU.

Nice Genesis. You should upgrade those headlights. Like color changing LEDs that are WiFi controlled.

Dig the "Rudy" style truck. I know they get a lot of flack amongst the traditional hot rod guys.
I have a '36 cab and bed that I've been wanting to build up like that. I just have way to many irons in the fire to even mess with it.

Here's a shot of my '40.
