Battery question

Just curious,Does jumping someone else's battery harm your vehicle and battery ?

Ya know. I'm a ripe old age of 29, and have jumped all sorts of vehicles.
I've heard rumors of blown up batteries, fried computers, etc. But have yet to ever see one of those in real life.
I just always hook red to red and black to black. Works like a charm every time.

I've never had a problem till my recent experience when I hooked up to jump correctly and the other persons battery and the cables started smoking
