Virginia City area?

Hey Guys. A couple of buddies and I are going to be heading towards the Sparks/Virginia City area and will be traveling the outback around the area. We are looking for some isolated camp spot that is a relatively close drives back to town for some sight seeing. Do you have a favorite camping spot/trail that you enjoy that is worth checking out? Perferably stock rig friendly?

So you know, it's a bit cold and rainy out lately and so the ground will be mucky but, there are areas out in the highlands north of Virginia City that offers some decent camp sites.

Thanks Eddie! We were thinking initially of heading to the Sierras, but because of the unpredictable weather lately and snow depth, we thought the desert might be more user friendly. LoL Thanks for info...maybe casino camping should be an option too?:thumb:

Just be careful and be smart, especially if you are heading out into the desert alone. The weather here can be very unpredictable and you can find yourself severely stuck with a very, very long walk. Don't be a Stolpa!;)

You can probably get some cheap hotels this time of year. That said, listen to Eddie and Sharkey. We had another 4" of snow at my place this morning and we are lower elevation than VC. :yup:

It's what I would do. I might also consider staying at the Gold Hill Hotel - Nevada's oldest and continuously operating hotel and it's haunted too!  :D

Is that the hotel I have seen on some of your travels? Is that in Virginia City or Carson?

Thanks for the heads up. What is a Stolpa by the way...although I'm pretty sure I don't want to be one.:cheesy:

Lol. It's the name of a family that got stuck in the Nevada desert during the winter. The guy was an absolute idiot but the news made him out to be a hero. There was even a TV movie about it. You can google them for a "good" read.

And coming from a Search and Rescue background, if you do get stuck and you are pretty far out, FOR GOD SAKES stay with your vehicle. 8 times out of 10, Air Squadron finds the vehicle before the person hiking out. In a few cases, they never find the individual who left the vehicle, but the people who stayed with the vehicle.

Good luck and yes, the conditions for wheeling could be really bad. Listen to the experienced here, ask them how they know. ;-)

That was a good read Sharkey. Thanks for the suggestion. There were a ton of classic mistakes made, but I'm glad everybody made it out alive. Should have packed survival supplies with food and water, had the wife and child stay with the vehicle for shelter, and somehow found a greater source of fire. Sounds like a rough way to spend a seven day vacation! LoL
It reminds me of the story "The hunt for the Death Valley Germans".
I saw that link on this forum and read the whole story. It is a really long read, but if you are looking for an exciting story filled with survival mistakes, that's a great Nevada story as well.

This is not the time of year to camp around VC. There are no areas close to VC that are suitable for camping this time of year. The roads outside VC highlands turn into a icy slippery mush during the winter, they'll get even the best equipped rig's stuck. If you must camp, see if Virginia City RV park is open. But your best bet is to get a room at Silverland, have a drink at my friends bar "Old Corner Bar", and a good meal at Cafe Del Rio.

This is the best advice in this thread. It was snowy and icy in Virginia City this morning. Let me know if you make it up here. I could show you around or atleast meet you at the Corner bar and point you in the right direction.
