Key Drivers Behind M/T Tire Replacement

This will probably generate flames galore, but it's something of a serious question. What are your triggers behind when you replace your tires?

With most tires, like an A/T, we can simply run them to the tread bars, or if you're a northerner, until they just are useless in the snow. I tend to replace my tires sooner than most just because they seem to no longer 'feel' good to me. Last set of tires I truly ran the distance on, was a 60K mile rated BF Goodrich AT T/A KO2. Curious how far they'd go, I got 59K to the wear bars, but they'd been 'shot' for at least 10K. Became very wooden.

As I look to up-size tires and look for an M/T of some sort, it seems obvious that there's some point, well before tread bars, where replacement it advisable. So, thought I'd ask, for wheeling what tend to be your triggers? I've seen some pretty thin skinned stuff out there.
