Base Steel Wheels?

Does anyone have any suggestions about using or replacing the base 16" steel wheels on a '13 JK?

I'm probably not going to be able to do a lift for a while but still want to get bigger tires. Other than the look of the wheel, is there any reason I should replace the wheels with the tires?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You can always get the Rubi rims that come in 17s and a mud terrain thread rather than the stock 16s street tires. Plus the Rubi wheels are a little bigger...

If you ever want to run an after market brake system, like Dynatrac Pro Grips, or even Terrorflex Big Brakes, you won't be able to with 16" wheels. If you buy a set of Rubicon take offs, you'll need wheel spacers with taller, wider tires.

You can check Discount tire, too. They have inexpensive after market wheels, and good tire prices. I had a set of 5, mounted, balanced, & delivered to my front door by UPS.

Someone, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you need 4.5" of backspacing, to run some 33" tires, and most 35" tires.

Here's a offset/backspacing calculator

Thank you both for responding with great ideas and information. I haven't decided how far I will go with different upgrades and mods yet, but this info will definitely help with choosing the direction. Thanks again.

Thank you Napalm. I think that is the route I'm going to go, at least until I can do the lift.

Thanks again everyone!

Editing my response cause it was a real mess....

if you choose to go with 17" and 33" tires you will be able to fit everything in with no lift and no spacers apart from one spacer on the tire carrier.
If you choose to go with 33s on you 16" wheels, i wouldnt be able to tell you if it will rub. but i doubt it? logically speaking with the above statement...
if you choose to go with 35" tires on 17" wheels you will need spacers since they are known to rub a little. a budget boost will help them fit. its minimal but will work out great

i can only speak of the 17" wheels from experience

EDIT: i think you need to have a little lift for 35's but someone might be here to correct me shortly

That's what I did. I did a level and the 32 inch rubi take offs. Looks great, will do much better off road with the better set of off road tires. Best part is, it drives like a stock Jeep. That's one thing that's most important to me.
