97 Jeep 4.0 auto. Only in 4w hi and low it makes a clunking sound. What is this? transfer case? U-joint?

Is it making this noise in 4hi-4lo while driving straight. Only while Turing. Both. Etc. Any other factors. Any details will help is help you.

how do the u-joints look on your front driveshaft? Sounds like it could be inside the transfer car or maybe a couple chipped teeth in the front diff. Hard to say.

The u- joints look good, we were going to replace the fronts as an elimination process...
