JK Headers

I was wondering if anybody has used headers on their JK. I have a leaking and cracked standard exhaust manifold on my JK and I had my local shop order a new on and when it arrived, it is very different. The new one is a header not a cast one like standard.
I just wanted to know if anyone has headers and have had any issues with using headers instead of the s standard cast manifolds?

I have ripp long tubes. It defiantly changed the sound. Idk about power. Maybe at wide open throttle. If the one they sent is a shorty bolt it in. It will be no different than the oem. If same price.

I know we have other threads on this. Honestly, headers cause more issues than the worth IMO. Increase engine temps, leak, require retightening over time, etc.

^^^^^^this. I agree with you. I did headers one time and that was the biggest pain in my ass I ever dealt with. No matter what, you will never get them to stay sealed. Always tightening. I said never again after that

Don't waste the money on long tubes and certainly they won't cause more issues if installed correctly.. some shorties and have the cerokoted or jet hot coated and if you're worried about them loosening use stage 8 locking headers bolts.. never had one of them work their way out ever.

I have these

I bought these in 2015. My 3.8 has a blower and while absolute performance has not changed there was a very noticeable move of the torque curve lower in the RPM range.

I used some cheap ebay plug socks and have absolutely no issue with them. I did have them ceramic coated but I do regret not getting them wrapped before install as I am sure they contribute to under hood temps. They are great value at USD$400 and have not leaked, cracked, come loose or failed in another way in about 20,000 miles.

Yes I know they are not American. Sorry.

The stock manifold is cast but it is also very nearly a short tube header. If you are thinking short tubes then I would just stay stock.

I have a set of Gibson short-tube headers, ceramic coated etc...and it was hell during the time they were on.

my 3.8 never ran right, I think it was just an issue of too much heat causing a misfire.

I used Thermo Tec spark plug sleeves added additional thermo insulation by the time I got done trying to control the heat the damn engine bay looked like I had wrapped a thanksgiving turkey and it still ran like crap and the hood would still be hotter than hell to the touch.

Took the headers off, all the insulation, put mopar manifolds back on and it's been running fine since.

I've seen guys running the long tube and while still a lot of heat they don't seem to have the issues I had with the short-tube

from what I've read since this experience, the way the mopar manifolds are designed they are very similar to a short tube design.

that was $$$$ tossed in the trash

Thanks for all the info, I am not sure what to do, as my mechanic is a friend of mine. H is one only about six jeep specialists in the country, he actually said that a header was not what he expected to arrive. They sound like they could be a lot of trouble. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions. Im leaning toward not using it at this stage.

Not sure on your mileage, but if the Mopar ones lasted as long as they did, why not get another set? Our Jeep has 160k on it, manifold is cracked. We plan on just getting another.

Headers on my JK? Nope. If I want performance, I'd buy a 5.0 GT or something similar. Just my penny and a half.

Sorry guys it has nothing to do with performance or even wanting to have headers, my mechanic order the part from the US (I don't what shop), but a header is what turned up not a manifold. We both thought it was a manifold that was ordered. I had no intentions what so ever of putting headers on, I was just wanting to know if I could just use what turned up, or try and source another OEM manifold. I may not have worded it very well in the original post. Performance is not even on the agenda for this car, its reliability that I'm after and if this part is not going to give me reliability I want want it on the car. We are just very limited with what parts are available to us over here and to send an item back sometimes cost too much. So I just wanted to know that if this part was going to do the job I wanted I was going to keep it, but it looks like its either going back or going in the "never to be used bin". With he exchange rate and the postage this part alone if shipped back would cost me in access of $400.00 Australian dollars, then I have to get another relpacement. Damn JK some times I love to hate this thing. But Ill never sell it.

Yes mate they don't miss ya, the worst part is it will be near impossible to sell over here, and all the wrecking yards and second hand places don't have any. Im really worried about using it because of the heat issues, II really don't want any issues to arise like melted plug leads and misfiring. In 165000 kilometres I have had no issues, and I want it to remain that way. Im not sure about the US, but over here the Jeep is considered a second rate 4x4, behind the likes of the Toyota Landcruiser and the Nissan Patrol. However in saying that my JK has put many of these vehicles to same and it has done it easy. In fact one of my mates was approached by a magazine over here and a article was written about the best tourer (overlander). His JK was up against Toyota Landcruisers, Nissan Patrols, Nissan Navaras, Toyota Hiluxes, Landrovers and the like. To the amazement of the writer and editor of the magazine my mates JK came out on top. The only thing different is that his JK is a diesel. So in saying all that I need the JK to remain reliable.
Just a small load of dribble to show you what its like for the legendary JK Wrangler over here.

Yeah I'd say jeep is the king dangling in the US but that was a tone set from WWII ! we don't get the same vehicles as you guys which I wish we did!!! Worst case scenario if you want I can get you a manifold an ship it to you.. I have a fed ex account so it would be cheaper for sure.. just PayPal me.. anything to help out a fella..!
