3rd brake light

I am thinking that if it came with it then yes, but here in CA we don't have full inspections yet, just smog inspections. I could be wrong and I am willing to bet someone will have the answer.

I beleive here in california it is required as are the two side brake lights.
Although I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket or even a warning for not having it.

In California the vehicle code says all lights equipped with the vehicle must be in working order. As long as your vehicle is equipped with a fully functioning right and left side brake/stop/turn signal light you are fine. That is not to say some traffic cop (CHP) won't make an issue of it. They get really bored sometimes.

I've been running no 3rd brake light for over 6 months with no issues. Again as someone stated earlier in Cali we don't have to pass vehicle inspections though.

So what about no license plate light?

Do you have to have a third brake light to pass safety?

Per the 1983 amendment of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108, the CHMSL (Center High-Mounted Stop Light/aka 3rd brake light) are required on vehicles since Sept 1993. Here's the link

http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/problems/equipment/CHMSLCHP1.html

Furthermore, relating to your compliance in the State of Utah, there is a vehicle code which specifies compliance on all passenger vehicles manufactured after September 1985.

Rule R714-160. Equipment Standards for Passenger Vehicle and Light Truck Safety Inspections.
R714-160-11. Lighting, Subsection (6)

http://www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/r714/r714-160.htm#T11

So in short, yeah it's required in your state. Other states have their own version in their vehicle code to comply with the Federal Standard.

In California, 24603(h) VC regulates our compliance, but as 10Frank9 stated, it is hardly enforced out here, unless of course there is some mitigating circumstance which brought you to the attention of the local/state police.
