Jack it up as high as you can, support frame with jack stands. Disconnect sway bar links, lower the axle, and see if you can get your coils out. If not, sometimes you have to disconnect bottom of shocks and lower track bar bolt. You'll disconnect shocks anyways to install your new ones. No alignment needed, but you may have to straighten your steering wheel with the drag link adjuster sleeve.

Welcome to Wayalife. Everything WJCO said is correct. It is easier, if you loosen the lower track bar bolt. This write up should help you, and there are a ton of YouTube videos on the subject. You should start a build thread, and post pics of your work in it.

You can find how to center your steering wheel, here.

Good luck with it. I had never done it before, and did the same thing you are about to do. It isn't really difficult.

You will need a 21 mm for the track bar bolt. You can do it with combination wrenches, but sockets are better, a 1/2" drive socket set is even better than that, and a cordless impact driver is the best. You can get a set of jack stands from Harbor Freight. Get tall ones. Get some wheel chocks, too.

You really need a torque wrench, too. Here's a link with all the torque specifications.

Wrenching on your Jeep is fun & satisfying.

I had never done suspension work before and was able to change out my springs and shocks without too much difficulty. It took most of a day (though a chunk of that was spent looking for and borrowing tools). Make sure to have the Jeep well supported on jack stands before you go under it (jacks are not sufficient or safe). Be warned, every mud puddle you drove through will get its revenge as it rains down on you as you work.

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to mouting rear shocks upside down... i see some pictures with reservoir up and some reservoir down seems like a nitto filled shock might leak with reservoir down

You NEED to install shocks as they are intended to be installed. Some are designed to be can side up and others can side down.

You should also loosen all of the control arm bolts before you start and retorque them when you're finished with the jeep on the ground at ride height. Otherwise you can leave the bushes in a bind causing them to tear out prematurely
