Has anyone tried this with success trapping crud before reaching the radiator or heater core?

Haven't seen such a thing in use ever. From the looks of it, it seems it would decrease the flow rate substantially

That is an extremely course filter/screen. From the looks of it I think it would only catch large scale/rust in the cooling system. Water filters are common in Diesel engines, but actual filters.
