You need to put a wrench on the shock itself and then use a second wrench to remove the nut.

If you've got an aftermarket shock, you should be able to hold the can.

How can I stop the shock rod from spinning? I can't get the nut out. It's driving me insane.

sometimes the top of the rod should have a place for an allen wrench, they're a real pain in the ass with the limited working space.

what brand of shocks?

I just saw that they have a place for a smaller wrench on the top of the bolt where the nut is but I don't have a wrench for it, I was going to get one but the maintenance/car wash area of my apartment complex has no shade so I called it a day, I'm replacing some PROCOMP ES9000 with some Rancho RS5000XL

look for the lower nut like in Eddie's pics.

I also have an oil filter rubber strap that I've used to hold shock body with, it was cheap.
