Parking brake retaining spring

Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a spring at the end of the parking brake cable where it hooks to the lever that goes into the rear brake assembly? I vaguely remember removing them when I did the axle swap, but now my brakes are dragging. I have looked at a couple other Jeeps and some have them and some don’t.
