One of the things we love to do is to explore old abandoned places left for nature to reclaim. This thread is dedicated to those places.

MANZANAR AIRFIELD
Here are a few hi-res pics of our recent trip out to the abandoned Manzanar Airfield:

Very nice! My favorite places to explore were the abandoned mines of Arizona and ghost towns of Arizona when I lived there.

I just can't get enough of your fantastic photos and history lessons.:yup: Although I've never been to the Owens Valley, I am slightly familiar with its history with LA water supply and the WWII interment camp. Good or bad it is a part of our history. Here's the airfield in 1943. Thank you Bing images.:thumb:

Walsh Home.jpg
If you have visited the San Juan Mtns. in Southern Co. you have probably been to the Animas Forks ghost town near the mining town of Silverton. This home with the Bay window was once owned by Thomas Walsh who later discovered The Camp Bird Mine in nearby Ouray. The 2011 JKX made this a stop on Day 4, I think. It produced about $5k a day and has been operated off and on to this day. Thomas Walsh is most famous for presenting his daughter with the Hope Diamond for a wedding present. Fortunately, over the years local groups have worked to keep it propped up during the harsh winters and give it a little TLC from time to time. Some parts of the home still have linen backed wallpaper on the walls. I plan to visit it again this summer.:D

This is Beek's Place. It's on the top of the Santa Ana Mountains between Orange and Riverside County. Must have been an old homestead. It looks like the house was made of the surrounding rocks. If you find yourself at this place chances are you are in for about an hour and a half drive back the way you came, since they have closed all the gates down from the Main Divide rd. on the north end of the mountain range. I found this out the hard way. All the rich people got tired of people offroaders driving through their streets. Bedford rd is the last way down if you are heading north from Maple Springs rd.
