Coming from someone who runs and likes their Metalcloak suspension. Their tie rods have a bad reputation, and from what I have seen, for good reason.

They're great if you want to look at a constantly flopped tie rod. And deal with stupid fucking spring retainers that are supposed to hold the boot onto the rod ends.

Ironically I just got a quote from Bubba at Exodus Jeeps today for a 1.5" tie rod he makes in-house with GM 1 ton TRE's for $250.00. Comes powder coated too for that price. :thumb:

They actually changed the boots recently, they don't fall off anymore.
Agree about the flop though. I had to use the misalignment spacers when I installed hydro.

I used synergy tie rod and ram assist and never had a problem with a floppy rod. It can be setup to not flop and will take a pretty good beating.
But I would go with the Exodus Jeeps rod. I have seen them in person and they are badass.

There are a ton of other tie rods out there but here are the specs on the ones mentioned so far. I didn't realize the Synergy bars were different now. Mine is over 3 years old. It has held up to hits just fine but at the time I thought it was kind of silly that I had to run anti-flop washers. And the boots on my version suck.

Metalcloak: 1.375" dia /.375 wall 4130 chromo/1 ton TRE's $349.00
Synergy: Same as above $375.00
Exodus 1.5" dia/.250 wall/1 ton TRE's $250.00

The one I build isnít a chromo, itís DOM. Pretty standard stuff when it comes to steering linkages and is fine until people compare it to a chromo and the pricing. Some feel like spending the extra money. I use DOM because itís tough and doesnít require heat treating after welding like 4130 does. This is important since I tig weld the bungs into place. I will be putting together some in the future that will be aluminum but Iím not there yet.

2.5 ton treís 1.75Ē 7075 aluminum

At $550, itís a little pricy, but it wonít bend. If you hit a rock or hang on it it bends back to straight

I bend my drag link *every* time I go out on the rocks and my tie rod every few times. I've always replaced with stock components thinking I'd have to buy a lot of them to catch up to the price of the hi-zoot products. Not anymore. I'm done with that and ordered the RPMFAB aluminum tie rod and drag link. Yeah, I bend my tie rod bashing into or dropping onto or backing over rocks after screwing up my line, or sliding off something or anything else unplanned.

My vote in here is .25 wall DOM, just have somebody fabricate it for you. I doubt it will be as expensive as most you can order pre-made online. I have personally landed the whole front end of my jeep onto my DOM tie rod, and no telling how many times its kissed rocks; it is still fine. I'm pretty surprised people have bent them at all. Aluminum seems pretty cool, but I guess i'm stuck with the if its not broke mentality.

I drive slow and steady, especially since this is my only vehicle. But I'm rather new to this so I go out as often as I can and learn as much as I can, so I usually hit trails I'm under-qualified for and I make plenty of mistakes.

Check out the drag link. Somehow slipping off my line into that position bowed my drag link.

From what I've seen, a bent drag link is typically caused from running bigger tires and trying to steer in difficult situations - most typically when the front lockers are engaged. Muscling your steering wheel alone can generate enough force to bend it. If you run a ram assist, you will not bend your drag link. Trust me, Rubicat is still running a factory drag link even with her 40" tires.

Eddie, quick question... I also have noticed a very slight bend in my drag link.... probably from pushing my stocker through some tougher areas... Both you & Bubba have recommended running the factory drag link... But If one does not plan on running a Ram Assist for a long while... would it be a good idea to upgrade the drag link? My fear though is the pressure that may put on the Sector Shaft.... especially when I bump up to 35ís.... I know this is directed to Eddie and not me, but I would recommend the ram over the beefier box. The ram takes stress off the drag link and the sector shaft. The bigger box does neither. It just beefs up the otherwise vulnerable sector shaft. Why use a bandaid when you can get a cure, for close to the same cost?

There are sector shaft braces. Synergy makes one. Another company makes them too, but I forgot which company. Maybe JCR?

Unlike the TJ, YJ and the CJ before where the steering box mounts and/or the frames are weak and a brace was helpful to have (I ran a brace on both my TJ and CJ), the JK frame is quite strong and a brace really isn't needed. Certainly, they won't do much to prevent the kind of rotational breaks that you see on most JK sector shafts. At least, I haven't seen them to do much.

I agree with this 100%. To me, the larger box is just applying more force against everything ďdownstreamĒ of it and will likely bend/break any weak-point down the line. An assist takes a lot of pressure off the system. Not all, but a lot. You can still find yourself occasionally making a couple attempts at steering around something.

I have personally seen a big bore bend an aftermarket tie rod exactly where his hydro assist clamp was mounted. So the argument that running both prevents failure doesnít stand either.

I have mounted the Synergy brace on steering boxes before and for the little money they cost, to me itís worth putting on there. Like Eddie said though it will not stop a rotational break.

I should say, though, that a ram can put extra stress on the tie rod and lead to failure, particularly if the ram is substantially nonparallel to the tie rod. At Moab earlier this year, my ram pushed my OE tie rod out quite a bit. I was able to make it drivable back to town, where I got an OE style replacement at the local NAPA to finish my trip. When I got home, I got a much stronger Currie. The point is, if you go with a ram or a big box (or both), youíre probably going to want to beef up other components as well.

I've never bent a tie rod or drag link...I must be doing it wrong...

However I have broke my track bar mount weld on my JK6...im not sure when, but I ran Bronco Canyon with Eddie last month with a broken mount. It's a testament as to how good the DTD/three link EVO suspension is...the steering felt like there was a dead spot during a full lock to lock turn, but it still turned pretty well...drove all the way back to WA , then had it rewelded with beefier gussets

Yeah, ideally, you really want a ram mounted on the knuckle and then to a mount on the axle. You can definitely run one on the tie-rod but you really do need it to be a beefier one like the Currie you now have.

Moby is a 2007 and it came with a Delphi box. Back in the day, I was able to just send them mine and they sent me a ported one in return. I think you can still do that with the new China boxes but they aren't as strong. Or, at least from what I have seen.

It's a testament as to how good the DTD/three link EVO suspension is...the steering felt like there was a dead spot during a full lock to lock turn, but it still turned pretty well...drove all the way back to WA , then had it rewelded with beefier gussets

What? Really?? Man, I had no idea.

What? Really?? Man, I had no idea.

I didn't know either...I kept checking all the bolts & nuts to see if something was loose...not until I got home and had it on a lift , then turned the wheel was it clearly apparent...

Eddie, did you tap into your stock gear box? Or is there a stock box kit Iím not seeing?

Not directed at me but figured I'd chime in. Redneck Ram does box tapping. I did their core charge kit. It's $1000 up front, and they ship you a tapped box, hydro lines, ram, ram tabs, hardware etc. Once you install it, you ship your box back and they refund you $400. Great for those that don't want to buck up the 3k for a full PSC system.

Now that you've said that, I remember my spotter yelling "Turn passenger! Turn that wheel as hard as you can! Put some muscle into it!" I couldn't turn right very far afterwards. Lot's of 3-point right hand turns to get off the trail after that. Hydro-assist, eh$ Dangit.

One thing to learn from this is that the spotter may see the line you need to get on, but they are not shelling out the $$ for broken stuff.

When I need to turn, I will back off a bit, unlock the front locker, and free up the steering. I never force the wheel. If it won't turn relatively easy, it may be time to back up a bit and get out of a bind, then turn and go again.

You do know you can lock and unlock the front locker without unlocking the rear, right?

With time and experience, you will learn to pick a better line, and if you miss the line, don't be afraid to back up and reset before trying to just force it through.

That said, I have tore up my share of stuff, and am probably not finished doing so, but good judgement will reduce the amount and cost of damage.

The only issue with unlocking the front with the factory locker is at times it required moving the vehicle forward and back, at least mine did, to get it to disengage. So that may not be a good option for someone that is bound up making at turn while locked up on a bunch of rocks. If youíre running ARBs or similar itís a great idea. I love the almost instantaneous ability to lock in and out as needed.

I have usually been able to get nine to unlock by steering the opposite direction a little, unless it is in a real bind.

I figure finess is usually better than brute force.
Now if I could just remember that more often 😖

WFO, Synergy, Fusion, Currie etc. Pick one that agrees with your wallet, you likely won't bend any of them anyway.

Am I correct by saying with the Currie, you do not have to drill out the knuckle to 7/8" then add a tapered sleeve? But the other "beefier" tie rods, you will have to drill? So I guess my question is... does one really "Need" 1 Ton ends that require drilling of the knuckle?

No drilling with the Currie unless you're going with a flipped drag link - which I do not run.

For what its worth, Iíve narrowed my search down to 4 Tie Rod choices..

1. Currectlync standard - $375
1.5Ē Tube
2. Currectlync Extreme Duty - $740
1.65Ē Chromoly
3. Fusion 2.5 - $550
1.75Ē Solid 7075 Aluminum
4. WFO 2.5 - $480
2Ē DOM .25 wall

All 4 donít require drilling the knuckle. Currectlync standard uses a one piece rod/joint end which is $80 to replace.

The other 3 use the same Rod ends... The Joint Cartridge is also $80 and its modular so you donít have to mess with length adjustment when replacing.

To me, the WFO is the best bang for the buck.. And also Exodus Jeeps is a forum sponsor that sells it.

I live in a relatively mild climate (no salt, something like 200+ days of sun/year) and the TRE's on my WFO tie rod are already corroding and look "weathered". This is nothing a wire brush and some fluid film (or the like) can't "slow" but the implementation of high/er quality SS would have been nice for things like the exposed threads and main body tube, as soon as the paint is scratched, it oxidizes faster then a similar scratch on the frame/OE skids of the jeep, and WAY faster than any of my LOD armor. :twocents:

But as far as FUNCTION, Zero issues to report. :thumb:

I'd avoid aluminum...... I've got it and while its nice that it can flex pretty damn far and return to its original form, there have been several times wheeling where I needed the whole front to stay rigid but my xd2r box and ram were strong enough to start folding up the tie rod "flexing" it more than it should. Like others have stated most reputable brands are fine, but I'm in the fusion 4x4 corner. save up and get the strongest you can. never hurts to have to much but like you said broken in the woods you'll wish you'd paid a few bucks more....

Honestly, I don't even carry a Hi-Lift with me anymore. Most of the time, people use it incorrectly to change out things like a tire. The scissor jack is fine if you're still stock but if you're built up, it won't do well to hold up the weight. I would recommend that you carry a good bottle jack. It's what I've been carrying for years and it gets the job done better, faster and safer.

@ soonersfan - Whereís your friend? I forgot, he was asked to leave. You next bruh?

I acknowledged I broke the forum rules multiple times? Your response was back handed, so one man talking to another I do not believe oh would have spoke to me like that face to face, I believe you would have been a little more respective and not hide behind these responses. I never said my feelings were hurt? Quite the opposite, you are the one acting like your feelings are hurt. I tried deleting my post but couldnít figure out how haha again I am sorry that I disrespected the the forum I fully realized I fucked up, I was simply saying I didnít like the way you decided to go about telling me.

After I bent my stock tie rod I went with the RuffStuff DOM tie rod. Bent that one less than a month later. I am now running the RPM Fab Aluminum tie rod and it's been great. I wanted to try out Synergy because I run their drag link and suspension, but I just had to see what the aluminum hype was about.

good to hear, i'm waiting for the brownsuited gentleman to drop off my alum tie rod and high steer!
