While pickup trucks have always been a part of Jeep's long heritage, it'd been almost 30 years since they've actually had one in their family line up. Sure, there'd been a lot of talk about one being made and endless speculation and rumors as to when that might be but year after year, it continued to be an elusive unicorn... or I should say, up until now anyway. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see highlights from the 2018 L.A. Auto Show where Jeep finally revealed what so many of us have been dying to get our hands on, the all new 2020 GLADIATOR. We apologize for the audio being difficult to hear - it was crazy loud at the reveal and we didn't have time to mic everyone. We hope you enjoy the video just the same.

Great coverage! Looks like they really spent some time figuring this one out. Will be really cool to see what modifications come to this platform.

Yes...it's me, getting out and wiping it with a rag...how cool is having a washer for your camera?...I'm wondering if a rear facing camera is an option, and does it have a washer also?

So, I think I like this rig, god knows Iíve been looking forward to it. But, Iím concerned about break-over and departure angles with its length. Will this be trail capable? Are these valid concerns? Itís significantly longer than my JK and I know that can be tight on some trails. I donít know that it would have been able to do the Arizona trail that Eddie just posted that awesome video of. Just my 2 cents. I could be wrong.

Something that struck me was the spare tire mount. It can hold a 35 with no modifications. Does that mean we will not be able to run 37s or does it mean that modifications can be made to accommodate larger tires? In any case, I really really like this truck and the towing capacity. My co-driver has been looking at trailers lately with an eye on road trips.

It's a truck...so yes, break over and departure angles are not as good as any shorter wheel based rig with a bed...but my Brute has a similar wheelbase and 5" bed as the new Gladiator, and I have wheeled it in a lot of different places including most of the trails at Moab...where it excels is hill climbing and off camber situations...

As far as the Arizona JLX trip, they had a full size pick up support truck running the entire trail...

thank you for the common sense answer! I hear so many complaints from people all over the internet about how long it is. It's a (real) truck so it's going to be longer than your Wrangler and that's OK. So it may not do everything a Wrangler will do. It will still do WAY more than any other pick-up out there. And once the aftermarket gets rolling, who knows? I like it. I could do most of the wheeling that i want and still be able to tow a decent size trailer to camp.

It looks the same to me, but hard to tell without actually measuring...the Gladiator frame is slightly shorter than the Brute...I'm sure with all the input the FCA engineers had from the Brute build, they decided to shorten up the wheelbase because of the turning radius...the Brute is like driving a boat...my F250 has a tighter turning radius, hence why another reason I changed the front axle to an XD60...I'm often the guy doing 3-point turns on the trail, especially on tight switch backs...cameras definitely help here...

Very cool! I like that they went with Gladiator...just wish they had maybe tried to give the front end more of the Gladiator's profile than just keeping the JL front end. Not saying it's horrible but really, that classic Gladiator grill!

Shouldn't be too long before someone bob's that bed down to 4' or less giving it a better departure angle than even a 2 door JK. For the rest, it's just a matter of getting used to it. Have wheeled the Tacoma for 20 years and it's not too bad even stock. The newer trucks definitely sit higher but the JT bed looks like it's actually exaggerated over what the newer Tacomas and Canyons have for departure angles. Guess that's the price to stuff a 35" tire up under the bed. It'll be a truck so it's not going to out perform any of the stock JK's or JL's in its stock form. Different use philosophy. I'm sure Eddie's build will be sweet as can be but it'll still be a truck. Looking forward to watching that progress. It'll have to satisfy me until I can put a down payment on a diesel for 2020. Or maybe 2021... Disappointing that the diesel won't be matched up with the 6 speed manual though. 4.71 1st gear in the auto vs 5.13 in the manual I believe. Not an insane difference for daily driving but quite a jump when you shift a Ruby into 4lo. Reverse has an even worse gap. Meh...maybe things will change in the future.

Now do I trade off the '98 Taco TRD or say screw it and have all three... Tough question.

This will sound crazy but I personally think the 4.71 1st in the auto with the Rubicon tcase is too low for many things. Used to get wheel speed. It's one of the reasons I got the sport. Anyone who has wheeled a JL Rubicon in normal drive and thought it was great you were probably actually in 2nd. In most cases you have to manually shift it to first in 4lo. 1st in the manual is crazy low

Lol I'm a child of the 70's...manual trucks had 3 speeds, granny, 2nd, and go. Only started in granny if you were going up a hill or needed minimal wheel speed. Pretty much started in second and shifted into 3rd around 15mph. That's where you stayed. At 55 it sounded like the motor was about to explode at 3500 rpms. In fact, my friend blew up his dad's old 72 chevy tooling along at about 75. Low and slow is my moto. I'm in no hurry to get anywhere these days. Sounds like I need to find someone near me with a manual JL to try out. Can't see trading my JK in though. And my garage only holds 3. Yes, it's funny you should ask....I am a bit jealous of Eddie and Cindy's setup. I need to find a property out in the boonies with shop space measured in acres...

Not 100% sure about the ability to carry a 37 under the truck. Of course, you could always carry one in the bed.

Awesome video as always! Thank you for the coverage and that thing is kick ass! They definitely put the thought into it on almost every single aspect!

So glad you enjoyed our coverage of the Gladiator at the LA Auto Show :)

Nice job on the content and editing, as always.

That Gladiator is going to look so badass on 37s! 🤤

Thank you. 37's will look great on this truck for sure. 40's even better.

Great video, definitely some cool features, will like to see the diesel and maybe then itll be time for a new "work truck"

LOL!! Badass "work truck" at that too :D

This is exciting!
Glad you were there to see it first hand!

Us too and if only because we got to be there with all our old friends.

Awesome video, The end of next year may seem like forever but itís a lot shorter than 27 years. [emoji322][emoji322][emoji322]

Thanks!!!

That's a damn good way of putting perspective on things. :thumb:

Fun video! Like the Gladiator a bunch. Wonder if they'll have a "Rescue 2" version? LOL

Well, if they do, I'll bet you see it at EJS :yup:

Iím definitely impressed with the Gladiator. The engineers did an amazing job on this.

I wonder if some of these features like the front facing camera, the Bluetooth speaker, and the Offroad Plus button will be added to the JL?

Great video as always and thanks for sharing with us.

I'd be surprised if they didn't.

WOW!! Jeep you guys hit it out of the Park! So many features on the new JT that I was not expecting. That forward facing camera is amazing and Iím sure with help a lot with picking a good line. Although I can see some issues in the future with getting hung up on some of the harder obstacles. But man what a great looking truck. [emoji1360]

Been waiting for the JT, like most of you, for some time. Torn between getting the 3.6L now or waiting another year for the diesel engine (with the huge increase in torque and that 8-speed transmission, that's a game changer!). REALLY wish they offered the diesel engine option with the roll-out but, oh well, what's another year matter?

That front camera and removable speaker is boss! Wonder if they will have a tonnenu cover for the bed and if current aftermarket suspension systems work or still need to be develop. Being a longer vehicle (by 30") than the JLUs, a set of 37" or even 38" would look terrific, esp with some AEV wheels.

Any idea on costs? Hopefully much less than the $100k+ Brute AEV packages.

If you go up to 37's or 40's, you will have to put the spare in the bed like I did with my Brute...

Maybe modify the tailgate somehow? Might take a lot of doing and not sure how it would look with the lower-profile truck bed and a huge tire popping up.

They are officially referring to it as "Gladiator". To the best of my knowledge and looking at all the shirts I saw Jeep guys wearing, the code letters for it is JT.

Nobody is talking cost or at least, nobody I know at FCA but it will for sure be more than the JL. Don't think it'll be quite as much as a Brute though.

I doubt it will cost anything near a Brute...AEV conversions were in an order by order basis...the Gladiator will be in a full scale assembly line production...I'm going to guess a fully loaded Rubicon model to be under $62K...

The JLUR I priced out at my dealership was $55k and it wasnt fully loaded so I would imagine a JTR fully loaded would top $60 and I would never pay that for something I want to go beat up off road. Maybe some day but not any time soon I'll stick with my JK.

if I take into account my modded jk my F150 and my trailer all together then yeah it's probably over what a moded out gladiator Rubi would be but I have more options with 2 vehicles

Not necessarily true. I know of a dealer that has killer dealers even on the new JLs. They have a Rubicon MSRP of $52,440 they are selling it for $46k no hassle. I bought my 17 JKU from them and it was a great experience.

Ha! My old CJ was a three speed and as you said 1st was geared pretty low so you really could just shift once and drop from 2nd to 3rd. Drove that thing from PA to FL with a small U-Haul on the back and a too speed of 55mph going downhill with a tailwind lol.

I'll admit it's cool. And I can see some uses for it....and not to be a negative Nelly, but A Jeep truck didn't sell the first time. I have no idea who they think is going to buy this....I can only imagine just hardcore Jeepers buying this thing. So again, sales aren't going to be huge and maybe Jeep doesn't care....It still has no hemi and it doesn't really have enough space in the bed to do a full size truck's job. I personally hate dropping the tailgate to fit things, bikes, motorcycles, etc. I just don't get the appeal. I can't imagine it being better than my 2018 Power Wagon...which I mean, if you're a real man, that's what you drive for a pick up.. or a Raptor. Ha!

Ever looked at the spare hanging under our Ram? That tiny spare is the second most annoying thing with the Ram. Its nice that a 35" tire will be able to fit under the JT. I put a full size spare under my Ram, the tire is 34" and a very tight fit under there.

As for the Ford. Iím more than a little pissed they discontinued the V8 for the Raptor. For me itís sacrileges to offer anything but a V8 in a truck like that.
