Dynatrac hardly needs to save money on a build that has a set of $15k axles on it.

Now maybe smaller shops might look to save a buck or two, but I think this is another show build and those tires are targeted at the crowd the build is for. It certainly isn't for any rock crawling group with that bed.

It is definitely getting better as each phase, but it seems to me just a show of how much money can be wasted at each step. Put on that camping bed/box thing for one show, now rebuild the whole thing again.

I don't mind shortening it and having two doors...after driving Brute for 5 years I totally get it...but I would prefer the original bed...

And I don't get the tires...there are several great USA made tire choices available...but I'm sure there is a reason...sponsorship?...China trip in the works (new market?)

Creating a unique build is understandable, but taking the JT and chopping it down to this doesnít make sense. They couldíve done the same thing with a JL. And I totally understand the struggles of long trucks. I drove 4 door F350ís for a very long time, but I canít imagine the JT is that bad. I like the creativity, I just donít think is worth cutting it down to a 2 door and shortening the frame.

I understand your point...when I had Brute on 35's...and got high centered on the trail occasionally...eventually changed suspension, tires and gearing to where it is today...while it is far more capable than when I first got it, it's still cumbersome on the trail...I'm going to make a few mods to the bed cage and turn this into a camping rig...

I'd like a Gladiator truck with about 128" wheelbase...and the original 5' bed. The only way to do this is shorten the frame and eliminate the rear doors...and make a king cab with space behind the front seats...and a small window on each side behind the seats as well...I think this would still look like a Gladiator truck with better break over & departure angles...and would make it a bad ass trail rig...

What Dynatrac did was shorten the frame to make a 120" wb truck...which is real close to the JL wb...hence your argument...

Looks like some posts were lost here. Lucky for everyone I had a copy of what was posted.

Here was the response to the comments from Dynatrac.

I love Wayalife members because they keep us honest and on our toes at all times. Thanks to all the critics and supporters. Controversy is what keeps this forum exciting.

Iíve kept silent long enough. Now that yíall can see a more finished project, Iíd like to comment on a few questions that came up on the CodeX build.

Why didnít we just do this on a JL?
ēAsk Jeep why they didnít just make a pickup out of a JL? The best reason is that Jeep invested many tens of millions of dollars into the Gladiator rear frame and suspension. Itís designed to carry payload and perform the duty cycles of a truck, not an SUV. In addition, itís already been done, very well done, many times on a JK. If we did it on a JL, Iíd bet dollars to dog turds that we would have had folks say: ďThat makes no sense when a perfectly good Jeep pickup truck is Ö.Ē But, maybe Iím just being cynical.

Why did we shorten the wheelbase?
ēThe reason you wheel your Jeep instead of your Super Duty is because it is small and highly maneuverable. One of the biggest criticisms of the Gladiator I have read over and over is the loss of break over height, and tight maneuverability. Itís not terrible, but you canít fix that without shortening the wheelbase. Besides, we wanted to do something different. Wayalife members, think about how many 4-door Gladiator builds you will see in the next 10 years that look almost the same. If you hate it, donít worry. You wonít see too many others running around.

Why didnít you just make it a 2-door?
ēAs cool as that is, Mopar already made a very good one. We donít imitate and copy. Besides, want to bet you see a 2-door, or extra-cab model sometime in the future from the factory? Best reason for the extra-cab is to be different, and because I am 6í6Ē tall without cowboy boots, I want legroom.

Who needs a Hellcat in a 4x4?
ēIf money is the issue, then aspire to do this one thing before you die. No offense, but if you really believe this, then you are NOT a car guy or gal. You probably ride bicycles more than you drive, you think oil companies are evil, and you also own at least one Prius or Leaf electric vehicle. Most women find youíre not manly enough, and you might even come from France where they power their cars with sewing machines.

Why the big fuel tank?
ēSee Hellcat above. The GenRight tank is very well made, its very well protected, and many are deployed in Wranglers to actually do long range desert runs (aka. Overlanding). We think we can handle the driving skills necessary.

Whatís with the ďDog CatcherĒ box?
ēThis Patriot Camper rig is very cool. I saw this at SEMA last year, and I think it is terrific. It is really 2 products. The bed can be purchased separately from the camper module that mounts easily on top. Granted, on the small tires it looked a bit overwhelming. However, it was a huge hit at Overland Expo, which is not the hangout for big tire 4x4ís and Wayalife members. Weíll get some shots posted with the camper module now that we have the final drivetrain and tires. The storage space, quality, and features in just the bed are outstanding, and the camping module makes it second to none. OE pickup beds do look sweet, but they are not as useful, or as cool as a custom flat, or utility bed. You owe it to yourself to check it out on-line. I am not a roof top tent guy. I sleep outside, on the ground, with no tent, so the last thing I always see is the stars. Iíve always wanted a good looking utility bed that held my gear, offered security, kept it well organized so I could grab my keys and go anywhere at a moments notice. Patriot Camper has this and I like it.

Seriously. Iím hoping to see a bunch of you get out there, throw down your $50k, and show us how to do this thing right.

To which I responded.

If we did it on a JL, Iíd bet dollars to dog turds that we would have had folks say: ďThat makes no sense when a perfectly good Jeep pickup truck is Ö.Ē But, maybe Iím just being cynical.

 looks to me like the millions of dollars jeep invested in the rear frame and suspension were cut out anyway.

Wheelbase is too long to wheel.

Canít fault you there as I think my JKís are too small every time I get in them.

Yeah but Iíve never seen an overland build that puts a crazy big motor in that has horrible fuel mileage.

Why the big fuel tank?
ēSee Hellcat above. The GenRight tank is very well made, its very well protected, and many are deployed in Wranglers to actually do long range desert runs (aka. Overlanding). We think we can handle the driving skills necessary.

What is it, 32 gallons? Two 4 gallon rotopax on a roof rack with the factory tank would achieve the same exact thing no? And not leave a really weak frame in the back.

The box, to each their own. As for the throwdown, thatís kind of irrational isnít it? 99.9% of Wayalifeís are not in the business and are not going to go do a custom build like this to church up their business they donít have.

As long as you folks like it, thatís all that matters. No need to get butthurt because some random people on an Internet forum donít like your build.

Whats up with the Milestars anyway? Ive seen a lot of people switch to them even when they had perfectly good tires to begin with. Is it just the new factor?

They are, or at least were, a fair amount cheaper than other tires. Plus they come in a 38, which is like ďgoing to elevenĒ as compared to the usual 37, I guess.

If you can't bum a spare on the trail, you can get one at your nearest Panda Express once you're off the trail. Huge benefit for a lot of people.

Well, I dunno, but once the 40ís went under it I liked the look. With just the flat bed aesthetically, I think the header on the bed behind the cab would look better if it was the same height as the cab but understand it is designed to match the camp box add on. For overlanding the goal is certainly as competent and reliable of a rig as you can build, but fuel economy is always the fine balance. I have trouble believing the mpgís in this situation will really work well enough to be generally accepted. A genuinely good overland rig requires a lot of thought and planning and realistically Jeeps arenít really the way to go for said purpose, especially as a globe trekker, as for this build as custom as it is, replacement parts? Not easily accessible round the globe. The fuel economy, the load capabilities, etc work against jeeps in general as a platform. Neat build imo, but kinda shit the bed as far as the intended advertising use. Having built a dedicated travel/camp rig I will say, in the end it sucked as you were stuck packing everything up every time you wanted to explore the area around camp. Thatís why I built the basecamp trailer. Easy to pick an area, pick a camp spot as a base of operations for a few days and have the rig free to wander and explore. Like any other product, knowing your audience is a biggie. But then wtf do I know given how many wealthy yuppies have joined the ďoverlandingĒ scene and what a rush to keep up with the joneses it has become. I see lots of disposable income > critical thought going on. I highly doubt a rig like this would be considered were folks to plan another expedition 7 for instance. Just my .02. Cool and different build though [emoji1303]
