Duratracs: what is a 33??

So I'm going tomorrow to grab some new tires. I don't plan on investing the money to beef up my new jeep to handle 35's just yet, so I'm going with a set of 33's. I've been doing some research and decided on Duratracs. Mainly based on price vs a steady stream of positive reviews. I'm moving to Alaska, so their outstanding review in the snow really stuck out to me. I'm looking to get a set of tires that stand 33 inches tall, however I did read that duratracs, worse than others, do a bad job of coming close to the advertised height. 285/70 r17's are advertised to be 33's. can anybody speak to what size i'd need to get a tire closer to an actual 33?

all that being said, i'm waiting for someone to convince me that i should be getting a set of trail grapplers lol. I would love to get a set. all that's stopping me is the fact that it's going on my daily driver. I've read duratracs win vs the nitto's when going on a daily driver. but who knows, living in an environment like Alaska, a daily drivers experience is bound to be different than a daily driver down here in the lower 50 : ) so please, if you think i'm going the wrong way, let me know.

i'd also like to add that all the information i've given is coming from the mouth of other people, and i have zero first hand experience with either of these tires. so please feel free to point out any misinformation!!

Thanks in advance!

i have 33x12.50r15 Duratracs and I love them. (although i wish i would have went with 35s) I haven't actually measured mine but when next to stock Rubicon BFGs they look way bigger. I'll measure them in the morning and post back.

Here's a pic next to stock rubicon BFGs.

I'm not sure about spacers on the stock wheels. My rims have a lot of backspacing so i don't have a problem. But when i had the stock bumper i hit the air dam/ plastic skid in reverse even with my rims.. and I have a 2.5 inch lift.

I'm running 285/70/17 Duratrac's on my stock wheels and no lift currently. They do rub at full lock and its very tight on the stock carrier. Wheel spacers or proper backspacing would be nice.

You can see both in this picture. ImageUploadedByWAYALIFE1363410906.077853.jpg

I love the trek top on the 2 doors. Everyone has it for the 4 door but you don't see a lot of 2 doors rocking it. Nice rig!

285 70 17 is a 33" tire. Don't need wheel spacers. And since your going to Alaska, the nittos won't even compare to these in snow.

Good luck!

Well they didn't have them in stock, so I had them ordered. I went ahead and bought some 15s to put them on for the same price that 5 285/75 r17's would have cost. Very pleased!

I didn't look up how much backspace was needed but the guy at discount assured me that the wheels I bought had the perfect amount

Which wheels did you decide on. Ive been eying the MB72's and found out yesterday that they were discontinued.

so could anybody tell me what the backspacing is on these rims? I've been looking all over and haven't found anything. I've read that i need to have less than 4 inches of backspacing for 15's to not hit the calipers. The salesman told me that they had the correct amount of backspacing and i took his word for it, but now I'm getting curious the more i think about it. I was just unable to find anything that showed the backspacing..
