On the way up to Tahoe, we decided to take a detour up U.S. Route 6, head up and over the White Mountains and explore some of the cool ghost towns in the remote Nevada desert. Here are some pics that we took from our side trip.
Turning off on to U.S. Route 6 and heading out to Nevada...
Our first stop along the way was Montgomery Pass to check out the burnt out ruins of the old casino that once operated here between 1953 and 1974 and was known for being the highest casion in Nevada...
The hotel part of the Montgomery Pass Casino is still is surprisingly good shape with many of the rooms still containing beds, linens and cleary sigs of squatters taking up residence in a few...
Of course now, the only residents here are the wild horses that roam around freely in the area...
Checking out some of the antique gaming machines in a storage shed nearby...
The Boundary Peak Lodge Motel across the highway was fun to explore as well...
Down from the summit, we headed north off pavement and stopped at the old mining town of Columbus. Originally settled back in 1865, Columbus served as the main residential and commerce center of the Candelaria Mining District until about 1976...
In spite of the its peak population of about 1,000 people, a post office, newspaper and business of all types, you can see that very little remains of this town now...
Like many of the homes you can find in ghost towns in the area, fuel tins were flattend out and reused as a nice siding...
Just a bit north of town, we visited some of the residents of the Columbus who decided to stay behind...

At the edge of town, we paid a visit at the old Candelaria cemetery...
