Durango/Silverton CO Area

So we just returned from our trip to the Grand Canyon, New Mexico and Durango vacation. While we didn't take the Jeep we did scout areas for a fall trip back up there. My question is, we found multiple roads with no "Keep Out" signs and many looked to be okay to ride on. Is anyone familiar with the area around Durango/Silverton area and where are some good places to "adventure"? We are not looking for crawling, just great out of the way spots to take the Jeep and the kids to see sites overs may not be able to.

I was amazed at the amount of Jeep rental places there, it was my first time in that area and man did I fall in love with it. Even Flagstaff AZ was outstanding. :)

Thanks

The reason you did not find "keep out" signs everywhere was that you were in the West. Despite all the bitchin' about regulations and restrictions the fact remains that most of the land is the public domain, unlike the East or the South (I was born and raised in Florida) where the vast majority of the land is privately owned. In SW Colorado much of the land is controlled by the San Juan, Uncompahgre, and Rio Grande National Forests. Unless there are active fires or posted restrictions you should be fine.

The San Juans are often called "The Jeep Capital of the World." It's the Mother Lode. My wife and I have spent weeks exploring the dozens of ghost towns, trails and railroad beds in the area, and we've only seen part of it. It's what got us in to off roading in the first place. We're going back again just after the 4th. We love it so much!

My favorite place

The San Juans are my favorite place. We just got back from an outing there. My buddy hauled his 1971 Ford Bronco from back east out and we took it over Ophir Pass, Imogene Pass, Corkscrew Pass, California Pass, Hurricane Pass, Cinnamon Pass and Engineer Pass. I haven't been on Black Bear but I heard it is great too. There are tons of trails to explore.

My favorite place to jeep and explore. So many trails in a radius of 50 miles around silverton. You need a week though.

We really loved that area. Everytime I would see an area to check out I would remind the wife how we should have taken the Jeep. :)

I will for sure go back up there this Fall with the Jeep and spend a week or so.
