How weather resistant are winches?

I just ordered a smittybuilt XRC 10 comp winch, my question is how well do these handle normal weather (rain, snow, etc.) I know you shouldn't fully submerge them in water but will rain do any harm?

Most winches are protected from the elements.Some are solid state while some are not.

My winch has been out in the weather for almost a year now, It has been poured on, and frozen solid and it still functions perfectly.

Do you treat your wire ? Need to do any particular maintenance ?

I probably should do more than I do. You know the better you treat your stuff the longer it will last. So far I have just done my best to keep dirt and rocks out of the cable and keep the cap over where the controller plugs in thats about it. It works great even after not having it in a garage for a year. I want to swap over to synthetic line but as long as I have cable that works and is functional I cant seem to justify buying something that I have that works. so abuse it till it breaks right? :doh:
