Painting powder coat

Just read thru this thread and got me thinking. These rings were not powder coated to start with. The way I understand it, the powder coating process only adheres to metal, not bondo or plastic. Right?

Correct. I started the thread before actually looking at the wheels to find out that the rings were black plastic.

You may of already answered this but how come your not purchasing the metal rings and installing the wheels using the metal rings?

Haven’t read all the replays. But for what it’s worth, I’ve done this for EVO sliders the whole time. I don’t like the self etching primer because of the slight texture, so have used automotive primer. Then a good spray paint.

Since this Jeep is for my son who will be 16 next year, I didn’t really want to put true beadlocks on it but he liked the look of a painted rock ring. These wheels give him the option of converting to a true beadlock down the road if he gets the bug to continue the build to the next level.

We thought the simulated rock ring was going to be metal...we thought wrong. They still look great but they will not last with any real contact against rocks.

Might depend on the type of plastic, they make skid plates out of urethane that are pretty bad ass

Or curbs...still a good choice for a first set; can you buy replacement rings, say when your in a high speed chase with a couple cases of purloined Keystones whilst running over speed bumps and curbs...
