Random Internet Shit you've come across

Straws aren't even the beginning.

A couple of years ago they took away our plastic bags. All bags have to be re usable, and you have to pay $0.10 each.

They are going after everything that is a single use container.

Straws may be the last straw, but I doubt it.

Too many people here that like to tell the rest of us how to live, and worse yet, keep getting into positions of power where they can.

I didn’t know that people loved straws so much?

It's not the straws that I like, it's fucking freedom. Also, stupidity pisses me off. The "study" they're basing this whole shit on was a paper written by a 4th grader a number of years ago who made up his/her "statistics" by way of an unscientific poll they took.

I don't recall the whole story as it first came up years ago and was made fun of then. Now the Sierra Club or some other group picked up on it and began citing it as fact.

Right? When I was a kid, plastic bags didn't exist... All paper. All of a sudden, paper was bad because it killed trees. So plastic it was. Now plastic is bad. It's all bullshit.

It’s all ridiculous! Glad I don’t live there! I love paper bags, we do use a reusable grocery bag but whenever we don’t have enough space we ask for paper... it’s my favorite starter for my charcoal grill [emoji23]

Here is a link to the article.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/19/business/plastic-straws-ban-fact-check-nyt.html

Humans are dirty, wasteful, selfish creatures. We are all slowly destroying the planet. What most research does not show is where our American "Recycleables" end up. Most often poor parts of countries with little or no rules on pollution. American recycling motto should be "Can't see it from my house". If people as a whole understood what was going and picked up a few pieces of trash everyday I'm sure it'd be more beneficial than banning straws. While I'm all for helping the environment things go to extremes at times and really aren't more than something to try and make a person or group feel good.

Generally, environmentalists go to extremes every time.

Looking at the article you linked to, they're estimating anywhere from 142 million to 500 million straws are used every day. What they fail to mention is that there are only about 326 million people in the US. That would make that everyone in this country uses up to 1.5 straws every day. In the environmentalist's mind every one of those straws is apparently ending up in the ocean.

Now, according to a study done by Northeastern University, the US is #20 on the overall ocean polluter list at 1.4% whereas the top 5 polluters - China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka - account for about 60%.

Please let me know how banning straws and charging me $0.10 per plastic grocery bag in California is going to help the overall picture of ocean pollution when the US as a whole when we're barely a blip in the overall statistics.

The answer is that it isn't. Like you said, it's only to make a small but vocal group feel good and also gives another turn of the screws to the people from a government that loves to tell people what they can and can't do.

Finally, the funny part about the $0.10 bag fee... Originally, the legislation was supposed to have the funds go to environmental groups but the Grocery Industry snuck in and convinced the public that the ban was good but the fee should stay with the stores so they can buy the new plastic bags and pass the cost on to them... Capitalism taking advantage of socialism. 🤣

I don’t think the straw thing will be an issue much longer. Based on the looks of those fires California will burn to the ground before it takes affect.

CA is like a Phoenix, it's reborn every year from the ashes. Only down side is it's reborn more politically fucked up each time. Look at what PG&E is trying to pull. I'm all for potentially shutting down parts of the grid during high fire danger but passing on its restitution costs to its customers rather than stake holders isnt cool at all.
