News tonight said that Colorado DOT was going to start requiring tire chains for 4WDs on I-70 when the weather gets bad enough thus winter.

Does anyone have recommendations for chains? I'm running 315 r70 17 Duratracs.

I too live in Colorado and was curious about this. Looking at the CDOT website, chains for ALL vehicles are only in effect during a 'code 16' which is very harsh weather just short of closing the road. This whole 'code' thing is new to me. When I did vehicle inspections in Silverthorne, I drove that road many times in pretty harsh weather, and never heard of this 'code' thing. So I'm not sure if that's old or new. Either way, it looks like most days, you wouldn't have to worry about chains. But for peace of mind, carrying them may not be a bad idea anyway. I've thought about getting some anyway just for more traction on icy trails or snow-packed trails.

really?? even for 4wd not just passenger cars? damn, I've been on I-70 when it's bad but never got pulled for chains.

You have to use cables or you won't clear your links or possibly brake calipers. I had to buy some in Germany never used them though. A lot of time the law allows you to be exempt if your owners manual states you are. Which all the jeeps without the factory 16" were states to in mine.

That stinks that they require chains now even if you have a triple peak rated tire like the duratracs

Security chain company performance z chains. They are the best I've run on ice. They aren't as noisy as others either. I used to have a set in my truck for 37's. Just make sure you order the right size.
