Caught the Bug
Hey Jeepers!

We are planning a trip to New Mexico in the near future. We are looking to stay either Sante Fe or Albuquerque. Going to look at some places on

https://www.airbnb.com/ to rest our heads.

We would like to get suggestions on places you ate at, visited, and explored. Seems to be a lot of ghost towns there.

I've read about places like The Blue Hole and Valles Caldera, The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, but I would like some off the beaten path sites as well.

I welcome all info and pics would be fantastic!

I recently stayed at Buffalo Thunder casino just north of Santa Fe. It wasn't bad.... Golf course was open and of course the casino was too.

There are a lot of great things to see in New Mexico (the Indian Pueblos, Bandelier National Monument, Valles Caldera, the Jemez, Sandia, Sangre de Cristo and Manzano mountains, museums, theater, art, and the like - you can find most on the Internet). There are some (mostly mellow) Jeep trails in the Jemez (close to Santa Fe and Albuquerque). There are more trails around Mount Taylor and the Manzanos (again, mostly mellow). Close to town we have Cedro Peak trails (closed right now because of deep mud - with the prospect of damage to the trails but perhaps open when you get here). Further from Albuquerque, we have more hardcore trails by Socorro, Truth or Consequences, Gallup, and (to the Northwest) Farmington. Never sure of my plans but shoot me a PM when you get close if you want to find spots to wheel while here.

Thanks for all the options! We love off the beaten path type of stuff and more like service and logging roads. :beer:

Hello guys I've lived in New Mexico for about 8 yrs now but haven't even got to check it out yet via been busy building a business but just started getting out and playing a bit we went out to a place called southern last weekend end lots of trails and there is supposed to be a lot of crazy rock crawling out there too here are some pics of what we did ! It is a huge area and I would guess at least a 1,000 acres of land let me know if and when u guys are coming down would love to meet some fellow jeepers and go out for a ride ! Ok a few thoughts/pics from our vacation in Santa Fe a few years back.

Awesome farmers market at the Santa Fe railyard. Dogs are not allowed and it's strictly enforced.

There's a great little French bakery where one wall of the restaurant is a window into the bakery so you can watch them make croissants and stuff. I can track down name if interested.

The Rio Grande was pretty cool to see but very muddy. Only the dog got in.

And watch out for snakes! This rattler slithered right under our car.

Check out Bandelier National Monument. It's a bunch of old cave dwellings you can hike through and actually use ladders to climb inside. Pretty cool stuff.

This was a valley we happened across while driving. I can't seem to remember where it was but somewhere near Santa Fe or Taos. It was absolutely stunning. Elk grazing in the foothills. Green grass as far as the eye can see. A cabin at the south end I'd love to retire in.

We also did some white water rafting which was pretty fun. If they give you the option of going in a funyak (inflatable kayak) do that. We had way more fun than the people in the raft.

But, the best drive of the whole thing was out to Christ of the Desert Monastary. You're on pavement with stunning views for most of it, then you'll go on a dirt road for the rest. We were in our Honda Accord at the time and the sun was getting low so we didn't make it all the way to the Monastary, but the drive was awesome. And I think the Monastary has a brewery associated with it as well which is cool.

Here is a timelapse of some of the drive. Doesn't do it justice at all. Reminds me a lot of Monuments in Utah.

You guys are throwing more fuel on the fire....lol. I think we are going West this Summer for Vacation. Thanks for the Pics....something to look forward to.

I did most of my growing up in New Mexico, both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The best part of the state is the food and of course the sunsets.

As other have mentioned, Santa Fe is a great area to explore, as well as the Indian Pueblos in Taos. While your there, you need to find Finns treasure too! Some rich guy hid millions in the mountain in NM and wrote a poem with clues to where it is hidden. Lol.

Well we are headed to Taos staying in a Casita and visiting Santa Fe next weekend. I have heard of a great place for breakfast called Michael's. Going to check out the Taos Pueblo as well. Any other suggestions. This will be a three day visit getting there on Friday an Leaving on Sunday. Thanks!

Just moved to ABQ about 2 months ago and am trying to get my jeep up to speed ready to hit the trails, should be good to go right after Christmas. I'm only TDY out here at Kirtland until about April so after Christmas I'm going to start planning some trips to explore. Looks like some cool things on this thread I'll be checking out and hopefully I can find some cool stuff of my own to post up. When the time comes the more the marrier I would love to hit up some NM locals and do some WAL trail runs.

I'm in ABQ too. Let me know when you're ready to explore. Southern NM is great to explore in winter months because it's usually not too cold even in February or March.
