I'll open with my disclaimer...

I have never been on this trail. All the info I have on this is from talking to others and what's available online. If you look up Experience AZ and then review the Temporal Gulch and Juniper Flat info, that will give you some ideas. With that in mind, I would like to keep the group small this time. As I'm told, many if not all of the hardest obstacles have bypasses. This will be a learning experience for me. I will cap this at 10 rigs for now.

NOTE - Body damage is possible according to different sources. Most occurred on "larger" obstacles. I hope to be off the trail before dark, but please be prepared as necessary if we are not.

MEETING LOCATION

(Intersection of AZ 83 & AZ 82)
Shell Station
3235 AZ 82
Sonoita, AZ

Meet there by 9:00 am and depart for trailhead by 9:30. It is about 13 miles of pavement to the trailhead. We can disconnect and air down there. I do not know if that gas station has an air station for airing back up. I will have my Viair portable with me, but does have its limits.

REQUIREMENTS

1) Patience
2) Great attitude
3) Well maintained, trail ready rig, working 4x4 and a good spare tire
4) Working CB radio
5) Off road tires please
6) Enough food, water, creature comforts for the day, for each person in your party, plus some extra in case of breakdown or other emergency
6)See #1 & #2 for further insight in my goal with this.

RECOMMENDED BUT NOT REQUIRED

1) Some sort of suspension lift (BB or leveling kit would suffice)
2) One working locker has been suggested by some, but open diffs by others
3) AZ State Land Use Permit (Looking at the maps it doesn't appear we will venture into these areas. If you want to be safe than sorry like me, it's a small fee to get one online. Let me know if you need more info about this.)
4) Skids/armor

Be aware/prepared that this is a human and smuggling corridor. Cell phone service may be non-existent.

The plan is to spend the day out there, trying the different obstacles, some sightseeing and getting to know each other. There are several trails that break off from Mansfield Canyon. Time permitting, we may explore some of these too.

Note that you will acquire additional scratches (az pin-stripping) on this trail due to low hanging brush/trees. Body damage could occur if you don't pick the right lines on 1-2 obstacles. From my experience today, you can run open/open (I got over all the obstacles without the use of lockers). :thumb:

Sorry, I'm not going to be able to make this one. It'll cause too much friction in the household with my son's 5th birthday the next day. I hope to be able to join you guys for the next one. Appreciate you posting this run.

No problem and completely understood. I had to clear the date on the family calendar as well as work.

put me down as a "90% chance"

Also I do not have a CB radio, would this need to be purchased first? also the rig is bone stock otherwise.

Maybe uberc4 can comment on your setup and how that would work out. I'd hate for you to drive all that way and not be able to continue for one reason or another.

The CB would be really, really nice to have. It's helpful to be able to talk to each other for many reasons. As I understand it, cell coverage is mostly nonexistent down there. Again, uberc4 may have more input since he just went Saturday.

Sounds good, i will look to pick one up. I am not very mechanical and hate when things look like they are done cheap. I.E. having wiring laying around. I will see if i can find a place that can install them up in Phoenix.

Here's the one I have and install is a snap.

Hardest part was running the antenna wire out to the tailgate. It is powered through a regular cigarette lighter type plug and fits nicely in the center console when not in use. Just my 2¢

CB is recommended like USMC mentioned, if you didn't have one, we would position you in between those that do.

As for the trail, I would recommend a lift for Lower Mansfield. You may get hung up in a few spots plus there are not bypass for all the obstacles. From what I've heard Upper Mansfield is a lot easier than Lower.

Some pictures of Lower Mansfield:

How did you end up running it to the rear?

Also did you mount the antenna to the passenger or drivers side?

I have the same CB, but don't have an external antenna. Not much range, but gets the job done. I usually use 2-way instead. Works a lot better and half the cost, but everyone else has to have one too.

I ran the antenna wire under the passenger seat carpet then under the carpet and plastic trim pieces all the way to the tailgate. I popped out one of the rubber tailgate grommets out, cut a hole in it, ran the wire through and reinstalled the grommet. I have some sort of tailgate mounting bracket. (Smittybilt or Tera flex or similar.) It just bolts to the factory carrier.

Edit: As uberc4 said, it can be used with the small, detachable antenna that comes with it with reduced range.

No, we apparently went the regular way. I am definitely taking my soft top off the next time I run it. Also, I ran it with no doors. Your vehicle will get scratched up either way...

I just saw this in the AZ thread in reference to Mansfield.

I don't mind the scratches but don't want to thrash my hard or soft top. Weather permitting, I plan to run topless and tube doors.

elgor...where are you located? I can help you run and mount the CB. Its really easy. As long as you have a mount where ever it is that you want it. In the meantime, if you dont have a mount, you can zip tie it.
