Floor Jacks and Stands

I've been trying to get my EVO Rock Stars installed in between other things the last few days and I keep running into problem after problem. A lot of it has to do with me not being able to get the Jeep up in the air high enough to be able to take advantage of leverage.

For those of you not lucky enough to have a full-blown shop with a lift, how do you get your Jeep up high enough to work on without killing yourself?

I've only got 3 ton jack stands and floor jack. I get using blocks of wood to give it a boost, but I don't feel comfortable putting wood on a jack stand.

My suspension drops all the way to the floor now when I take the jack off the axle and I'm tired of working on my belly. What do you experts recommend for a higher, but safe jack stand for working in your garage?

I picked up some larger 12 ton stands from Harbor Freight that get the job done pretty well.

I use a 3.5 ton jack and 12 ton jack stands for the frame. Does just about whatever is needed without a lift.

Thanks. I haven't seen 12 ton stands in my local HF. I'll take another look next time I go over there.

When you guys have it in the air, are you satisfied with the stability with the stands on the frame only or do you put another one on the bumper for added support?

Don’t forget your 20% off coupon the big ones aren’t cheap. I always throw one of the tires under the car if it moves and tips stands it has something to land on besides me. But at no point should your vehicle be able to move,level ground parking brakes / in gear, 4wd, wheel chock. It’s pretty safe.

Yeah, I usually do the tire thing too, but when working on the axle it's in the way. I always chock the tires. Thanks for your input.

I deff need some taller jack stands. With how knuckles sits now my 6 tons stands at full extension don’t even touch the frame when he is on the ground [emoji28]

Just a thought, but instead of putting wood on top of the jack stand, try under it. I have made pads with 4x4 cca cut at 11.5" and cap with a 2x12 cca cut to 10 5/8". Gives you a bit over 5" in height and very stable.

And yeah, coupon that shit for sure. I also slide a tire under, but it feels solid with all four corners on stands (or two and chocks).

Or get the orange and white 12 ton stands from HF as mentioned. That's how I installed my entire lift. It took so wood on top of my Jack to get it high enough to get the stands under it. Once it was up on the stands (All four corners) tires still on I shook the shit out of it, pushed on it from every angle, and basically tried to knock it of the stands. I couldn't it so I figured I'd be OK cutting, grinding, and wrenching under it.
