For more years than I can remember, Cindy and I have been kicking off a new year of wheeling by heading out to the Mojave Desert, during the first weekend of January and do so with old friends and new alike. This year, we decided to change things up a bit and did so by taking our friends out to a different part of the Mojave and just for fun, throw in a few optional rocks to play on. Along the way, we would get to see some of the oldest living anything on the face of the planet, stand in the center of an old WWII bombing target, ponder the mystery of a 50' concrete boat in the middle of a desert and try to decipher the cryptic writings left behind by people who lived in the area, a long time ago. The following are highlight photos from all the cool stuff we saw and all the fun we had on the 2018 WAYALIFE New Year's Kick Off Run - we hope you enjoy.

Before the Fun Run
Getting ready to head out. Being that we had just been out wheeling, Moby was pretty much loaded up with tools and supplies.
20180109132549-d97dd7d0.jpg

Packing up some essentials and for old time sake, decided to make it American Honey. Okay, more accurately, Bee Stings which is American Honey mixed with some 101.
20180109152447-303776a4-me.jpg

I suppose it was a good thing we hadn't washed Moby before the trip especially being that we saw some rain as we left home. With any luck, the wet stuff would stay up north for the weekend.
20180109132603-9c6d1ae0.jpg

Breaking up our drive by taking a break at one of our favorite stops along the 395.
20180109132615-f4336a19.jpg

After being on the highway for the better part of the day - we finally arrived at our home for the night.
20180109132630-2485cc9e.jpg

As luck would have it, some of our friends were already here.
20180109132632-7975860e.jpg

Starting off the evening with some tasty vodka tonics compliments of Tony and Steph.
20180109132620-a05929fc.jpg

Check it out - they even got limes that had #WAYALIFE stamped on them :thumb:
20180109150734-0cd8e70f.jpg

After moving over to our room which was a bit bigger, Moochie poured up some of the liquid gold.
20180109132634-0cfc35ea.jpg

To a hell of a good time to come - CHEERS!!
20180109132644-7dc98975.jpg

But wait - there's more - CHEERS AGAIN!!
20180109132652-89adcf36.jpg

With a few drinks in our system, it was time to head down and swamp one the local eating establishments.
20180109132655-125b7ddb.jpg

What a surprise - after dinner drinks? CHEERS!!
20180109132657-bdfaf397.jpg

WAYALIFE New Year's Kick Off Run
What a bummer!! The morning of our New Year's Kick Off Run didn't exactly start the way any of us would have preferred. It was bad enough that someone slashed Adam's rear window and stole his box of fluids but after seeing some gear oil under Tony's Jeep, I noticed his trussed and sleeved front axle housing was cracked just past the c-gusset.
20180109132703-43854e5f.jpg

Fortunately, Tony's folks lived near by and he was able to drive and leave his Jeep there. He and Steph then jumped into Moochie's Jeep and joined us out at the meet point.

Pick a sticker - any sticker and memorize the number that's on the back of it.

20180109132742-84f75ef3.jpg

Tom is excited to be 24.

Getting in a quick drivers meeting before heading out.

On the move at last and with all the colored Jeeps in the front of the pack.
20180109132758-031aa9f8.jpg

Some dark clouds up ahead but so far, no rain.
20180109132803-8aec47ba.jpg

Off of pavement and time to air down!
20180109132815-0934fa3d.jpg

There was a reason why we stopped to air down where we did and before heading out on the trail, I lead every out to an area just on the other side of the road.
20180109132820-b4a60012.jpg

About 11,700 years ago, a single Creosote bush began growing in this remote part of the Mojave Desert. As the bush began to die, new bushes or clones of the original began sprouting up from the edges of its roots. Today, this ring of bushes known as King Clone measures almost 70 feet in diameter and is recognized as being one of the oldest living organisms on the planet.
20180109132829-f70748f5.jpg

Like standing inside a time machine.
20180109132835-0d21b4f5.jpg

Back in our Jeeps and heading out to have some fun!
20180109132837-23823a75.jpg

Working our way across the dusty desert
20180109132847-76628ccd.jpg

And, here we are - our first stop of the day.
20180109132925-eb4c745e.jpg

20180109132923-e32a16d5.jpg

I couldn't tell you who put it out here, how it got here or why it's out here but I can tell you that for at least the last 30 years or more, this crazy 50' concrete sail boat has been sitting out here, upside down like a stone dolphin and this is what we brought everyone out to see.
20180109132910-f90b6ac0.jpg

20180109132857-a3c68cf7.jpg

20180109132903-95d03c76.jpg

20180109132913-e5428544.jpg

On the move again, we blasted our way across Soggy Dry Lake.
20180109132930-ad168445.jpg

20180109132934-12c84ebd.jpg

After rendezvousing in the middle of the playa, we lined up to take a group shot.
20180109132948-161f83db.jpg

20180109132940-438e8fd5.jpg

To the 2018 WAYALIFE New Year's Kick Off Run - WOOT WOOT!!
20180109133018-c293e714.jpg

20180109133014-6518513e.jpg

Getting back into our Jeeps, we made a short drive just past the ancient shores of Soggy Dry Lake and made another stop.
20180109133020-0b3a791d.jpg

Back during WWII, a series of circular targets measuring 600 feet in diameter were made in the Lucerne Valley and used for bombing practice.
20180109175629-42360017.jpg

Standing on top of the bullseye and sharing with everyone why we stopped here.
20180109133025-4d0a7983.jpg

Bits and pieces of practice bombs can still be found scattered throughout the area and here I'm holding a piece of the spotting charge detonator.
20180109133028-acd39154.jpg

Everyone looking around for bomb bits.
20180109133030-0c7d7dd2.jpg

The rings of the target were made out of asphalt and you can just make out one of the inner rings here.
20180109133040-7c0f2004.jpg

On the move again.
20180109133102-88c07e0d.jpg

Much like the King Clone, Mojave Yuccas grow much in the same way in that they tend to clone themselves and grow in rings. Our next stop was over at the Upper Johnson Valley Yucca Ring Preserve and it is here that you can find impressive specimens that have been around for about 2,100 years.

Departing from all the sight seeing we had been doing, we entered into part 2 of our run and that included rocks! Here's a shot of Moby ahead of the pack and climbing up to the top to give a helping had as needed.
20180109151229-30fa1f8e.jpg

The rest of the pack lining up a the foot of the first obstacle.
20180109151231-8681b29b.jpg

No shame in knowing your limits. Running a stock YJ, Brett worked his way up the bypass.
20180109151234-2e831b27.jpg

Robert followed him up.
20180109151246-5ceb63fa.jpg

I would have preferred Vic had rocker guards instead of side steps but he wanted to give it a go and ended up being okay.
20180109151248-c4cd30a1.jpg

Here's a shot of James showing just how close you get to the driver side rock.
20180109151258-c41e445c.jpg

Don starting his climb up.
20180109151305-392ebf29.jpg

Here comes Casey with his shiny new Chamber Pro II's.
20180109151317-4ea7749e.jpg

Dan up on top like it was nothing.

Moochie turn at it.
20180109151434-a684b8e6.jpg

Just a walk in the park for Ed.
20180109151442-6947cbaa.jpg

20180109151453-55d3666a.jpg

Kevin getting it on.
20180109151456-7757a715.jpg

Wait, what? Being in the back so long, Ray forgot to put it in 4WD and forgot to disconnect as well.
20180109151502-c9b063e7.jpg

Moving on to the next obstacle.
20180109151424-f52a9a3d.jpg

Being in a 2-door allowed James to wiggle his way through this obstacle with ease.
20180109151835-69245816.jpg

Don getting in some flex.

Dave reaching the limits of his droop but riding his way though without too much effort.
20180109151854-509649a9.jpg

Even without lockers, Adam manages to clear the rocks without too much fuss.
20180109151857-57c322ff.jpg

Casey didn't have lockers either and being in a 4-door, had to work it a bit more but was still able to make it through without too much trouble.
20180109151900-403b7928-me.jpg

Vince working his way through.
20180109151918-8e4b8a2c.jpg

After a nice relaxing lunch break at the top of the obstacles, it was time to get back on the move.
20180109152312-aed2e4eb.jpg

Working our way up the wash and taking on small obstacles along the way.
20180109152314-16b86515.jpg

20180109152321-fabeec32.jpg

The next big obstacle was totally optional and really, made for rigs running at least 37's. Running a set of 40's, clearing it was just a hop, skip and a jump for Cindy.
20180109152425-c7efc9b5.jpg

Sizing Dan up to make sure he's clear of any hang ups before giving it a bump up.
20180109152437-05ea06ad.jpg

With the biggest rocks behind us, it'd be smoother going for a while.
20180109154224-9427b5ac.jpg

A few rocks here and there made it interesting for the stock Jeeps in our group. Here's a shot of Brett making his way through in his YJ.
20180109154243-b2d3b346.jpg

Robert's TJ was a bit more built so it made it through a bit easier.
20180109154303-592c21aa.jpg

Kirk climbed his way thought a trickier section of rocks just before the last big climb.
20180109154311-07613620.jpg

Don working it until he cleared it.
20180109154410-e5614422.jpg

Ken unintentionally dug himself in and on top of a boulder that wouldn't let him move forward or back. Needless to say, we had to break out a strap to help him out.
20180109154421-dbb149d3.jpg

Vinny helping out with the recovery.
20180109154418-1244f88d.jpg

With Ken freed up, Vinny took on the last set of rocks.
20180109154440-d78f6c20.jpg

Not realizing he was low on oil, Chris found he couldn't get into the gear he needed but still managed to bump his way through the rocks and without lockers.

Samuel up and over.
20180109154735-f3a844b3.jpg

Still connected, Joe got some serious high five action going!

Kevin getting ready to make his way up.
20180109154827-df0d1bda.jpg

And finally, Ray as well.
20180109154919-e4465e95.jpg

Out of the rocks, we began making our long descent back down into the valley.
20180109161356-d81f96cd.jpg

20180109161407-c9ebc683.jpg

20180109161414-8add76a3.jpg

Our last stop of the day was over at a small canyon, up in the Rodman Mountains and is known for its amazing petroglyphs. Parking was a bit tight here but we managed to get everyone in.
20180109161423-01ca6014.jpg

20180109161518-c8c88d6f.jpg

20180109161515-1cf9f661.jpg

With the sun all but set, it was time to start working our way out of the desert and back to pavement.
20180109161524-016e3985.jpg

Unfortunately, Moby had other plans for us. Soon after leaving the parking area, we flexed our way through a rut and heard a noise that brought us to a stop. Guess the last set of whoops that we bombed across left a little present for us. Of course, I don't think 8 years well over a 100,000 miles of abuse didn't help any.
20180109161527-0f339369.jpg

The wonderful think about redundant parts like a 4-link suspension system is that if you break one, you still have 3 to get you off the trail and home for that matter.
20180109161536-30dea353.jpg

13 minutes later, we were rolling again.
20180109161541-b1ce9ac1.jpg

Off the trail and airing up after a great day of wheeling.
20180109161549-ff227c7f.jpg

20180109161545-9cb5aa39.jpg

To a great day out on the trail and kicking off another year of wheeling with all our friends - CHEERS!!

Damn pushing it home tonight? Be careful may be icy and watch for deer. October 2016 on my way up there I took one out just past the June Lake turn off. Was no match for my LoD stinger but scared the hell out of me none the less. Safe travels.

A big mahalo to Eddie & Cindy for hosting this run...I very much enjoyed meeting both of you, as well as all the other forum members who participated. Eddie, your knowledge of the desert and the areas you wheel in is nothing short amazing...it's very apparent that both you and Cindy have a great passion for this sport and exploring in general...we are in debt to both of you for sharing this love of Jeeping...it truly is a Wayoflife...

Looking forward to sharing the trail with you both in the future...heading out this morning for the long ride back to the Seattle area; I'd drive down here in a heartbeat to run a trail with you guys again!

A hui hou and aloha.
