I have a 09 JK 2.8 Diesel and have just had a rebuilt motor put in. The JK has been running good for the last month but this morning the engine shut off while reversing out the driveway. It wont start but cranks really well. I've done the diagnostic code trick with the key in the ignition and no codes come up. The car has new injectors, glow plugs and fuel filter. Does anyone have any ideas before i get a mechanic to take a look?

I would start with the fuel pump circuit.

I know on Ford diesels that a weak battery can provide enough voltage to crank the motor but not enough voltage to run the fuel injection control module. If you have a spare battery lying around, it would be an easy test.

The 2.8 is the Duramax or the Cummins? Either way, both motors are finicky on the crossover tube torque. Even one that isn't torqued to spec or slightly more will stop the engine from starting completely even though everything else is right.

Scratch that, I had forgotten that jeep had their own 2.8 crd. I would still check the crossover tubes. Other common issues for that motor with your symptoms are ignition starter switch, CPS, or even something as simple as a relay for the ignition system.

Thanks guys I'm going to use a OBD scanner hopefully that will point me in the right direction. It's a factory VM diesel they're average without a tune.
