MPG Towing

Just curious. People are always telling me what great mileage diesels get. What are you towing, what is your tow rig, and how many miles per gallon do you get? You can also add you mpg while not towing.

This is not just about Diesel engines. Gas burners post up, too.

Now, I don’t have a real tow rig, but I’ll post my experiences. Our Hemi Grand Cherokee 4x4, can get 22 to 23 mpg, just hauling the wife and I. I got as high as 12.4 mpg, hauling my travel trailer (3,446 pounds dry weight) from Mississippi to Ouray, CO. Unbelievably, the worst mpg was in the low country. 9 mpg from Dallas, home. Traffic had a lot to do with that. I’ll add that my Dad’s 2003 6.0 L Chevy gets 9 mpg, no matter what terrain, towing the same trailer.

2015 Dodge 1500 4x4 ecodiesel
Driving 65, gets 29, driving 75 to 80 drops to 26. And it rides great!

Towing 9,800# tandem axle tilt trailer loaded with a large machine part, averaged 19 at 55 to 60. It was comfortable with this much trailer, but I would not want more.


Just don't let the hired hand drive it and put DEF in the fuel, or vise-versa. 😠😫


2016 F-350 6.7L diesel
Empty, flat cruise, best it gets is 16.5. Normal commuting, about 15, and rides about leaving a buckboard wagon.

Pulling the same load as above, about 12 to 13

Pulling 48' gooseneck race trailer, about 8 to 9. Trailer with the Jeep in it is about 16,000#

With either trailer, it has enough power to go up any hill at a speed that will send you straight to jail.

Which race trailer do you run? It’s my five year plan to have one to get me and my family(jeep included) out west. I’ve been looking at them for a little while now.

It is a Vintage. As I said, it is 48', which is more than needed for fitting the Jeep.

Mine is older, I got it in a trade, but it is well built and pulls great, even for it's size.
For this style of trailer, I would recommend one, and I know they can be ordered in a lot of variations.

Our 2006 F250 6.0 diesel (stock, no tuner) gets 13mpg pulling one Jeep on the small trailer (5500lb'ish) and we got 10.5mpg with both Jeeps on the gooseneck (roughly 12,500lb) traveling to Moab and back. I typically tow at 65mph, slower if the speed limit requires it. Unloaded, the truck has seen mid 18's also at 65-70mph. It drops pretty quickly if I set the cruise at 80.

I’ve also got a 2005 F-250 6.0l crew cab FX4 that gets about 17 mph unloaded on interstate. I routinely pull the ski boat (4K lbs) to the lake and get about 14-15 mpg.

I noticed the eco diesel is no longer available in Ram pickups.

They do get pretty good mileage but it's not really about their weight when unloaded it's what they do when towing. I currently have a Ram 3500 Mega cab with a mild 3" lift in the front and 1" in the rear running 35" tires on stock 3.42 gears. I get 15-17mpg everyday driving but I've pulled a 36' 5er weighing 14k and now my PJ buggy hauler with Jeep weighing 10k. I get 10mpg all day long...I could do better if I didn't pull 70mph up the grades without breaking a sweat. I lost 2-3 mpg when I went from stock tires to 35s but loaded and unloaded.

I will be selling the Ram and getting a 2019 Suburban that has the L96 6.0. I'm not crazy about the motor but it's the only motor they put in the Suburban 3500HD so we'll see how it does towing.

The 6.0 won’t pull like a diesel, but it’s strong, and reliable. It like gas, though.

What does your old man get with his 6.0 not towing? One great thing about that motor is it does NOT have all the new cylinder deactivation or automated fuel management than the new GM motors are getting. I'd be happy with 9mpg towing I just hope I get 17 or better around town.

It’s a 2003 crew cab, regular bed 2500 Chevy. I drove it for a few weeks. It gets 14 to 17, depending on how hard you drive it. It has well over 100,000 miles on it, and he’s only replaced the starter, and the flywheel cracked, but the mechanic said he’d never seen that happen on one before.
