DIY Trail Vise

I'm too cheap to buy a trail d-vise so I tried to make my own. Here's what I came up with. First I drilled 2 holes in some 2" square bar stock. The radius's were milled with a rotary table. Then I milled them to the thickness I wanted and milled slots for the jaws to mount into.

I used a piece of .250 wall 1.5" square tubing for the sliding portion and milled it into a channel.

I made a nut for the lead screw and tapped it with a 5/8-8 acme tap. I welded a 15/16th nut onto the end of the lead screw to give the ability of using a crescent wrench in a trail bag. I put the nut inside the channel inside a piece of. 180 wall 2" square tubing to check for fitment.

I had started a fixture to be used for notching tubing with my rotary table and mill. I finished it by drilling and taping 2 holes. I needed to use it as a V block to make another fixture for cutting the knurl in the jaws.

I cut the jaws apart from each other after being worked on as one piece and drilled a hole in the moving jaw for the lead screw.
Once all the pieces had been machined, I started welding everything together. The nut was plug welded into the main body.

Nice work! Tedious work knurling the jaws I bet.

Thank you. It was tedious but it came out great and I think it was worth it.

Dude's got skills...back in the day I would fab our own specialty tools in our shop...but now, I'd just pay someone to weld a vise to stock to fit my receiver hitch, or get the one from Mac's

Your's came out nice...

Great work! I always tell my wife that my weekend labor rate is $100/hr so I don't do projects around the house unless it saves me that much. Of course this rule doesn't apply to Jeep projects, I will work all weekend and brag that I saved $100 [emoji849].

Ha! I'm the same way...

"You've spent the whole weekend in the garage!"

"But I saved $150!!"
