I have been looking for a few years now for an early flat fender Willys.

This weekend I found one on Facebook for sale!

Well... It is more of a large pile of parts at this point... But hopefully it will be running soon!

The old timer that owned it got it in eastern Washington back in the late 80's. He drove it a little and then tore it apart to replace the brakes and springs in the early 90's.

Things happened and he never was able to get it put back together.

It came with a 1953 military trailer FULL of parts. Many of them new!

I think I have 7 or 8 6.5-16 tires that are all new. Extra wheels... Extra fenders... Extra fuel tanks...

I was worried about rust when I went to look at it. Outside of a small hole in the floor on both sides it isn't bad. The wood filled supports under the cab are also a little crunchy... But easy to fix.

The biggest downside is that someone pulled out the original flat head (L-134) and installed a F-head (F-134). Because that engine was made for the CJ-3B and newer high hood setups they had to cut a hole in the hood for it to close. Because of the engine swap a few other things are off. The factory fuel/vacuum pump was removed because the engine mount was in the way. It has vacuum wipers so not sure how that is going to work. They also replaced the tall carb with a shorter one from a 60's pinto.

Should be a fun little project. I doubt it will ever be show room quality... But it should be good enough to drive around!

That will be a fun project! Do you think the tires are still usable after all this time?

No idea. lol

It was stored in a shop from 1990 to now. I need to see if I can find some date codes on the tires and see how old they really are. They don't look weathered at all.

My plan so far is to put everything together and see what I am missing.

The previous owner started an 11" brake upgrade and leaf spring replacement. He got the front brakes and springs done. Looks like he got one rear spring done. Doesn't look like he was able to get the rear hubs off the tapered shaft so the rear brakes were never completed.

Installed the remaining leaf spring and started on the rear brakes.

I could see why he had trouble removing the hubs! They were really on there! Once I got them off I found that I was going to need some new seals. Figured since I had the axle shafts pulled out it was a good time to install a rear locker!

Seals showed up yesterday but still waiting on the locker.

When I pulled the carrier out I found the carrier bearing races were badly pitted. So some new bearings will be installed before it goes back in.

Here are a few more pictures:

Had to get some custom shims made so the locker fit within spec... But things are moving along again!

Rear locker installed in the carrier... Carrier installed in the rear axle. Rear axle assembled!

Got the new brakes installed and the tires/wheels mounted up... It's a roller again!

Pulled it out to do some pressure washing/steam cleaning. 73 years of gunk!
