wheel squeal - 2nd opinion

What are the causes of wheel squeal?

My mechanic took a look and found nothing wrong, so I'm wanting a 2nd opinion.

I thought it was just brakes needing replacing but mechanic says they're fine.

More details:
  • JKU 2011, stock
  • Where sound comes from? rear driver wheel, and now front driver
  • When it happens? Above 35mph, intermittent
  • Sounds like? metal rubbing on metal, higher pitched
  • Smells like? metal burning, like when grinding
  • Temperature? sprayed water into the wheel and it vaporized with a hiss!

Had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. The slide pins got jammed front drivers side caliper due to corrosion on them after I installed new brake pads. Same symptoms you are seeing.

☝️ This ☝️

It's important to make sure the rubber boots on the slide pins are there, and that the pins are well lubricated.

This goes doubly important for those living in salty environments.

calipers

OK, sounds like consensus is stuck calipers.

And yea, Wisconsin is salty :)

Looks like caliper service is above my skills/tools so I'll have my mechanic take another look.

If you can change the brake pads, the caliper service isn’t above your skill set. You just need someone to help you bleed the system after the install.
