Middle of Nowhere USA

Cindy and I have always been on a quest to explore (what some call "overlanding") the most remote regions of the lower 48 United States and, while there have been a few times where really did feel like we were in the middle of nowhere, the reality of things was, we weren't. Even though we've recently started carry a gas can with us again as we attempt to explore even deeper regions of Northern Nevada, we still find that with careful planning, it's simply not needed. It is unfortunate but, as you can see in this amazing map created by Vizual Statistix, there really are very few places in this country that really are in "the middle of nowhere".

Visual Statistix created this map using an analysis of where all major roads were including interstates, highways, large roads, etc. The areas highlighted in blue indicates you are "somewhere", red indicates "nowhere" and obviously, the varying shades in between indicate you are somewhere between somewhere and nowhere. I should note that some of the areas that appear to be nowhere are in fact National Parks or military bases where access is not allowed.

Anyway, if you're like us and like to get out as close to the middle of nowhere as possible, the west is where it's at.
