Winch failure?!

Was winching a 1-ton truck out of the mud today and unfortunately ended up having to do a single line pull with no snatchblock. Winch started making some odd sounds but I was too close to having the truck out to stop. When all is said and done I look at my winch and see these cracks. Has anyone else see a winch do this? It seems to still be operating ok...

That winch looks like it could use some serious TLC. On a side note, if my winch were to ever start making any weird, abnormal sounds, I don't care if the truck is close to out or not... I would stop in a heartbeat and make sure it was okay. You could have ended up in the hospital because your winch blew up and sent shrapnel everywhere.... but it's okay, because the truck was almost out :rolleyes2:

You are correct that I should have stopped, was a stupid moment on my part. I actually went through it before it went in 2 months ago and internally it was all good. Really it just needs paint. Well until this anyway

Yeah a coat of paint and it would make it look a lot better! But after seeing a crack like that, it's probably in your best interest to replace it. Or just throw some JBweld on and call it a day

I was at least smart enough to stop after I found that. There were still two more trucks and my buddy was trying to convince me it was fine... Needless to say we ended up using his winch. I heard from a little birdie that some warn deals are coming up so I plan on going with a zeon 10 or 12 and synthetic
